... to talk, but she pushed that thought to one side and decided to enjoy the moment for now.

Daniel was in the kitchen for a couple of minutes before returning with two plates of salad, a water bottle tucked under his arm as he walked over to his mother on the sofa. "Madame," he said in an over the top posh voice as he offered Candy her plate.

"Why thank you sir," Candy replied in an equally fancy voice as she took it from him, virtually salivating as she looked at the spread in front of her. Taking the fork in hand, she took the first bite, making sure she got a little bit of everything. "This is delicious baby, exactly what I needed," she said as she took another bite while Daniel sat down beside her.

"Thanks Mum," Daniel said in response, "I'm hardly a kitchen wizard, but it's pretty hard to mess up a salad!"

They sat and ate next to each other, enjoying their meal and each other's company as they chatted between bites. Daniel told her about his call to Louise and commiserated about needing to return to the building site in the next couple of days. As Candy finished her meal, she put her plate to one side and used a napkin to wipe her mouth before talking. "Actually, that was one of the things I needed to talk to you about."

"Oh?" Daniel asked as he took another bite.

"So, you remember that Brian called me last night?" Candy asked a little bashfully as she recalled the exact circumstances of the conversation.

"I mean, I was a little preoccupied, but I ...

... think I remember that," Daniel teased as he gently elbowed Candy in her side.

"Well," Candy replied, blushing as she wondered if her accountant had caught on to what was happening while they were talking, "he was running a financial report for me, based on my business budget, income, taxes, that kind of thing."

"Sounds fascinating," Daniel replied in a sarcastic but warm tone, to make it clear he was just joking.

"Well actually young man, I think you'll be very interested in what it showed, as it directly affects you." Daniel just raised his eyebrows inquisitively as he chewed on the last morsels of his lunch. "He's worked out that if business stays like this, I'll be bringing in enough money to cover all my bills and mean I can live pretty comfortably."

"Wow, that's awesome!"

"Yes, it really is, especially as it means you don't have to work anymore to support me." Candy looked down at her hands as she spoke. "I was very grateful that you were willing to help me pay the bills, but it's important to me that I can take care of myself." She reached out to take Daniels hand. "And that brings me onto the other thing I wanted to talk about..." Her voice trailed off as she stared across the room, as if trying to get her words straight in her mind.

"OK Mum, take all the time you need," Daniel reassured her, giving her hand a little squeeze.
