Chapter 15 - Separate Ways

Steve was sitting in the dock of the local Crown Court, sweating profusely and looking extremely nervous, stuffed into an ill fitting suit he hadn't worn since attending a funeral several years earlier. Hands shaking due to not having any nicotine in days, the buttons on his jacket struggled to keep his stomach contained within the fabric, sleeves sitting a good two inches away from his wrist as his arms bulged and threatened to burst out of the cloth confines. Taking a stained handkerchief from his pocket he wiped his brow as he anxiously waited for the judge to enter the room and for his sentence to be announced. His solicitor had advised him that due to the overwhelming evidence the police had found on his laptop, along with the numerous witness statements, jail time was a guarantee, but how long he would spend behind bars was still up in the air.

Candy and Daniel sat in the public gallery with several others, son holding his mother's hand for support as she stared down her abuser. She had made sure to look her very best today, wearing a custom made black dress that she had designed and put together herself just for this occasion. Her make-up was immaculate, hair tied up in a tight bun, held in place by two long silver pins as she did her best to hold herself up tall and proud in her seat. As important as it was for her to see justice done, she also wanted Steve to know that he hadn't broken her, that she was stronger than ...

The judge entered the room as the clerk ordered everyone to rise as he walked over to the center of the courtroom in front of the throng of onlookers. He was in his late fifties, brown hair slowly being taken over by gray with a noticeable bald patch on the crown of his head. His thin, silver framed glasses and warm smile gave off the vibe of a kindly grandpa, but he carried himself with an importance and confidence that couldn't be denied. Taking his seat he arranged his papers and looked around the room to make sure everything was in order before addressing the defendant in a stern, firm tone of voice. Steve, Candy and Daniel all hung off his every word with baited breath as time seemed to slow down. The next few minutes would change all their lives forever.

"Steven Moriarty, you have been found guilty of coercive and controlling behavior, damage to private property and assault by a jury of your peers. Upon reviewing the facts of the case, the evidence provided and the witness statements, the court feels that you should be subject to the highest sentence that can be issued under the law of the land. Based on this, you are hereby sentenced to six years imprisonment, minus time served."

The next few minutes were a whirlwind as Candy embraced her son tightly, a huge smile on her face, overjoyed to see justice done, bouncing up and down in her seat with sheer unbridled joy. Steve was cuffed and ...
