Daniel was unsure where she was going with this, but he continued listening to what she had to say. "You're so young and have so much of your life ahead of you and I really want you to experience the things I didn't get the chance to. I want you to go out and live life, explore the world, see other places, meet different people, to sleep with other people if you want to."

She turned her body to face her son, taking both of his hands in hers. "I would love for you to stay with me, and for us to be a couple, and spend every day together, but I can't be that selfish. I made a selfish decision when I left you behind in that hospital and I need to make sure I do the right thing for you now. I'm not saying this because I don't love you, or because I don't want you, exactly the opposite. I'll always be here for you, whenever you need me. You're always welcome here and you can call and text me whenever you want, but I don't want to hold you back either. Do you understand, baby?" She looked up into her son's eyes, deep and blue like her own. Outwardly Candy looked sure of herself, like she knew this was what she needed to do, even if deep down, the thought of being left alone again did scare her a little.

He would be with her and he would be happy, but before he had met Candy, he had so many dreams and aspirations that he would never get to explore. He had wanted to travel the world, to explore different cultures and experience different ways of life. There was music he wanted to hear, art he wanted to see and views he wanted to get lost in. Despite how much it would hurt to leave her behind, it wouldn't be forever. The bond between them was too strong for them to ever be separated, even if they were miles apart.

"I think I understand," he replied slowly, "and I think you're right too. Thank you."

"For what baby?" Candy asked.

"For being unselfish. For putting me first. For being a really good mum." Tears welled up in Candy's eyes as she lunged forwards, wrapping her arms around her baby and squeezing him tightly, peppering the side of his face with wet kisses as Daniel weakly protested. She finally pulled away, cheeks damp with tears as she looked at the human being she'd created over two decades earlier.

"Are you sure you are ok with it?" she asked, still a little unsure of herself.

"I promise Candy, you're right. Like you said, it won't change how we feel about each other and I know you'll always be here, just like I'll always be here for you, ok?"
