... place is more of a home to me than this room ever was. I always felt so unwanted here."

"Honey," I said, sitting up and pulling Carly with me, "I think your mom wants to change that."

    "She does."

"Do you want to give her a chance?" I said.

    "I'm not sure."

I was silent. I was hoping I wasn't about to piss her off.

"Carly... You forgave Rick for almost killing you. That's in your heart. That's who you really are. That's the reason I love you, you have an amazing heart. I'm not telling you to be best friends with your mom. You're a long way and a lot of work from something like that... but it can start if you forgive her."

She sat for a moment, staring at the floor.

"Yes, I think that's what's best for me."

Without another word, she got up and walked out of the room. I followed her back into the living room where her mom was still sitting, trying to process the last half-hour of her life.

Her mom stood when she saw us, and tried to say something, but couldn't. Her daughter Carly rushed into her arms, hugging her. Both women were crying, and stood there together for probably 5 minutes, until they were all cried out.

They sat down again, this time next to each other on the same couch. Carly spoke first.

"Mom, I didn't come back here to berate you. I came here to forgive you."

Laura's voice was a whisper when she replied, "I don't deserve forgiveness."

I spoke up from across the room, both women looking at me. "That's the best part. No one ...
    ... deserves it."

We stayed there for another hour before I could see Carly getting exhausted. So I told her she needed rest, and we headed back to the hotel for the afternoon, but not before making plans with Laura for dinner.

"I feel like I've just been in a car wreck," Carly said, sitting in the passenger seat on the way back.

"How do you think it went?" I asked.

"I'm not sure, but it's what I needed to do. It seems like there's something mom is trying to hide, though. I'm trying to figure out what it is."

    --------------

Carly slept for five hours that afternoon. I gently woke her about an hour before we were scheduled to meet her mother for dinner. The yawned and stretched her tiny body, looking up at me and smiling.

    "Hey you," I said.

"Hey, yourself." Carly sat up in bed, then slid her legs around to the floor and stood. "How long was I out?"

"About 5 hours," I said. "You needed it. How are you feeling?"

"I feel pretty good. I really think my mind processed some things while I was asleep, and I'm actually looking forward to dinner tonight with my mom," she said.

Happy to hear her say that, I bent down and kissed her forehead, then let her get ready for dinner.

We met Laura at a restaurant close to the hotel. It was a nice time, with Carly and her mom catching up, but avoiding sensitive subjects. I took notice that they did not talk about her father at all, and that was a subject that needed to be addressed. After dinner, we walked back to ...
