... the hotel and settled in a corner of the lobby. "Mom, I don't really know how to say this, so I'm just going to say what's on my mind," Carly said. Laura listened pensively. "I can't decide if I'm glad he's dead, or if I'm indifferent," Carly said. I expected some sort of shocked response or retort from Laura. She gave neither, but very tenderly said, "I can't say I don't feel a little bit the same." Now it was time for Carly to be surprised. "What? Why?" she asked her mom. "Just... so many things. Before I get into things about your father, please understand that there's still no excuse for how I acted to you, or shut you out. None. Your father was so upset when you told us you were gay. I tried to talk him into just loving his gay son, and he wouldn't have it. I know you realize that he only spoke to you when he absolutely had to when you were a teen. When he found out that you wanted to be a woman, he went through the roof, I'm sure you remember. But what you don't realize is that he told me that I would have nothing to do with you as well if you continued to live like this. I wasn't brave enough to stand up to him. He got so, so bitter these last few years. Just mad at the world, but it was his fault. I felt trapped. He was so angry all the time and irritated that his heart couldn't take it anymore. When he died, I almost breathed a sigh of relief. That's when I started looking for you." Carly nodded. To Laura, it seemed like an impossible situation, and made the wrong choice. "I need to think about all of this," Carly said, standing up. "I'm going to our room. I'll call you tomorrow." She said goodnight, and turned to me. "I'll be up there in just a few minutes, I'm going to walk Laura to her car," I said. She nodded, and walked off toward the elevators. I turned to Laura and motioned for both of us to sit back down. "I'm sure you understand this is a lot for her," I said. "I do. And believe me when I say that all of this sounds just as terrible in conversation as it has in my mind all these years. I should have done so many things differently..." "Would you do things different now, if you had the opportunity?" I asked her. She said nothing, but nodded her head. I continued, "Laura, I'm not saying that you do have that opportunity, but there's a chance that you might. That's all I can give you right now. Carly took a huge risk coming back here and facing you, ...
