... succeed. You know what? There's a good chance I'm going to get to law school finally. I did that all on my own. Without you, and without dad."

Carly's composure broke at this point. She started crying as well. She was trying to build herself up to say something, but couldn't quite get there. Finally, she took a big breath.

"I... I was beaten and left for dead. I had to go to the hospital by myself, I had no one to turn to. I needed my mom and you weren't there. If not for Jason, I don't know where I'd be!"

She buried her face in my shoulder, crying. She got up and walked down the hall, leaving me and her mother in the living room alone. I went to stand and Laura said, "Jason, wait."

    She looked down the hall.

"When Carly said she was beaten..."

"Yeah, and very badly. She had a massive concussion and some broken bones. Any more trauma and she could have died. She went out on a date with someone, and they did it to her when she told them she was trans."

    Laura's face reflected her shock.

"I'm an ER nurse, and that's how she and I met. The ambulance brought her to the hospital. I was her nurse for the two nights she was there, and since she didn't have anyone else, I'm the one that took her home and stayed with her to make sure she was ok. We've been together ever since. That was 7 months ago."

I got up and walked down the hallway to an open door, and looking in I saw Carly sitting on the bed with a blank expression. I walked in sat next to her. She ...
    ... didn't say anything.

"Was this your room growing up?" I asked.

"Yeah, it was. You know something I've noticed since we've been here?" She said.

    "What's that?"

"There's not a single picture of me anywhere. To be honest, I was actually a little nervous about you seeing a picture of me as a boy, but I guess I don't have to worry about that."

I shrugged. "It wouldn't have bothered me," I said.

"No," she said, "I didn't think it would..."

I tried to lighten the mood. "So... this is your room. Do you think we would have had crazy teenage make out sessions in here all the time?"

Carly looked at me with a straight face. Oops.

"Jason, you're 5 years older than I am. When you were 18, I was 13... creep."

My eyes shot wide open. I hadn't done the math before I made my joke. I looked over at Carly, who had an annoyed expression on her face. Then it turned into a small grin... wider, and wider until she tried and failed to stifle a laugh, so she busted out laughing, flinging herself back flat on the bed.

"OH my... my god! Th-the look on your face when I said that, that was so priceless! Oh you will never ever live this down!" She was still having fits of laughter, which turned out to be contagious. As I laughed with her, I saw the stress melting from her face. As our fits both died down, she looked around her old bedroom.

"This place is ancient history, isn't it?" I asked Carly. There was no evidence that a child grew up here.

"It is," she said, "our ...
