... likely not to put on any act she might try to make up. We drove through a pretty neighborhood, Carly giving me directions. Sometimes, when someone goes back to where they grew up, there are locations that trigger the remembrance of happy moments in childhood. There was none of that on this trip. Turning onto her street, she pointed out her house. There was a car in the driveway, indicating to me that someone was home. We pulled up to the curb and I got out, walking around the car to Carly's door and opening it. "You ready?" I asked, extending my hand down to her. "Yeah," she said, taking my hand and getting out. We walked toward the front porch hand in hand. We climbed the three steps up the porch, and Carly stepped in front of me. Hesitating for a moment, she rang the doorbell. I swear, an older version of Carly answered the door. Small in stature and I guessed to be in her late 50's, she stood there and stared at Carly for probably a minute. I started to get nervous, thinking that I should pull Carly off the porch and get back to Texas as soon as possible, when she finally spoke. "I... I didn't think you'd come," her mother said, voice shaky. "I'm honestly surprised I did," Carly's voice, smooth, confident, and a pang of pride swept through me. "Is this..." her mom said, gesturing to me. "My boyfriend, yes it is. This is Jason. Jason, This is Laura." I noticed that she didn't say 'my mother, Laura.' "Pleased to meet you, Laura," I said, ...

Laura, regaining some function after being shocked by our arrival, offered us both some coffee. We took it and sat down in the living room. Carly looked around the room, not yet saying a word. Laura spoke first. "So, does it look about the same? It's been a while." Carly looked at her mother and finally spoke. "Mom, why am I here?" Her voice still level, yet I noted a hint of an edge to it. Laura's shoulders sunk, and she hung her head. "I don't even know where to start," Laura said. "How about with, 'I'm sorry for ruining your life?' Maybe start with that!" Carly said, her voice cracking. I put my hand on her thigh and squeezed it, getting her attention. She looked at me and I exaggerated a deep breath, reminding her to do the same. She did and looked at her mom. Laura had tears running down her cheeks now and was visibly shaking. "Would an apology even make up for what we did? No... we failed you. I failed you. When you needed us most, we turned our backs on you. There is no excuse for how you were treated. I don't even want to try and think of one." For a moment, Laura ran out of words and sunk back in the chair she was sitting in. "You should see me now, mom. I have a great career. I have a great life. I had to fight like hell for it, but I have it. And you missed it. You weren't there to help me, you weren't here to see me ...
