"Um, I don't know. Think of something to surprise me." His face then lit up. "You could set me up with one of your friends for the summer! That would be awesome."

Heather tried to conceal her disappointment. Michael was really smart and had worked hard in school to get great grades. There were probably several smart girls in school that would like to go out with Michael, but Heather wasn't friends with any of them. Her friends had been interested in the social aspect of school. They had made fun of people like Michael who worked hard at their studies. Heather regretted that attitude now as she hadn't been able to get into the university she had always wanted to attend and Michael was going there instead. Heather had been forced to go to a crappy state college that wasn't anywhere as prestigious and had crappy sport teams.

Heather decided she would come up with some special surprise for Michael. It had to be something that didn't cost much money as college was going to a major financial struggle for her family. She would keep her eyes open for an opportunity to do something that would Michael very happy.

They reached their usual camping spot and were glad to see that no one was there. It was the right size for the four of them. Heather collapsed on the ground. Michael started setting up camp. When their parents arrived, ...

... they collapsed too. Michael set up the two pup tents on opposite sides of the fire ring. Around the fire ring were a log and three foot-high stones with flat tops. Michael inspected them to make sure they would be good to sit on and they meet his approval. He got out the camp stove and then hiked down to the creek to get some water. He started a pot of water to boil and then started setting up the sleeping bags.

Heather and her parents finally stirred. Everyone helped with dinner and finishing setting up the camp. The dinner tasted awful as backpack dinners always did. They started a fire and talked around it for a while. Mom and Dad sat on the log and held hands as they always did while Michael and Heather sat on rocks on each side of them. Soon everyone was ready to go to sleep.

Dad had lent Heather and Michael's sleeping bags to a friend and they had come back ruined. Dad had bought them new ones for this trip. The new ones weren't as warm as the old ones and Heather couldn't get warm in hers. It took a long time for Heather to fall asleep. As she lay there, she heard a sound that she couldn't identify at first. Eventually, she figured it out; it was her Mom saying "Ah, Ah, Ah" rhythmically while her father occasionally grunted in time.
