Dinner was excruciating. Her Mom and Dad wanted to hear all about her and Michael's days. She kept her comments short, but Michael went on and on about the preparations he had done for the camping trip and how much he was looking forward to it. He had been in Boy Scouts and had gotten his Eagle. He loved to camp. This was one of the few times Heather wanted to strangle Michael.

In a break in the conversation, Heather asked Michael, "Could you please clear the table for me and load the dishwasher?"

"Sure. That will be four chores you will have to do for me when we get back." They had agreed long ago to never expect the other to do something for free. If Heather wanted to Michael to do a chore like clearing the table, she had to do two similar chores for him later. If Michael borrowed money from her, he paid it back with 10% interest. When she needed Michael to help her with some homework, she had to negotiate with him which of his chores she would do as payment.

Her Mom and Dad were now going over the final preparations for the trip. "May I go up to my room now?" asked Heather.

"No," said her Mom, "this involves you and we don't want to be yelling up to your room all evening."

It was 7:30 before Heather got up to her room. She started placing calls. Patrick didn't answer. David was out on a date. Evan was at a party. Heather was running ...

... out of time. It was time for her last resort.

She knocked on Michael's door. "Come in!" he called. She went and saw that Michael had been readingThe Count of Monte Cristo. He had been reading that since graduation and hadn't gone to any parties. Heather told Michael about the party.

"Interesting," said Michael. "A party for thecrème de la crème, eh?"

"Yes. Little Bro, will you please come with me to the party?" Heather was 17 minutes older than Michael and always referred to him as "Little Bro" when it was just the two of them. "I will do anything for you later. Please!"

Michael sighed, slowly closed his book and stood up. "OK, Sis. I will for you."

Heather told her parents that as Maddie wasn't dating anyone, she had invited Michael to tag alone to get to know her better. They said goodbye to her parents and headed out the door. Michael drove and when they arrived, Maddie greeted them at the door. Heather gave Maddie the six $5 bills. As Maddie escorted them back to the kitchen area, she whispered to Heather, "You brought your brother?"

"I couldn't find anyone else on such short notice," Heather whispered back. "Jared shafted me. It was Michael or not come."

The kitchen/dining area was where everyone was hanging out and talking. Maria was the only girl missing. Heather checked out the guys.
