... had made some new friends, Tess and Dave. That he was staying with them on his city trips and that Dave was going to be working with he and Geoff. It was no great surprise to her that Dave had answered the phone when Drew was not home on Sunday. Drew had not said anything to her about the relationship they had developed, he thought that would be better explained to his mother face to face. He didn't really want his father to know at all for some reason and if he was to be told he thought his mother would be better at breaking the news to him. Drew would try and explain it to him after he knew. "Yes he told me you had rung. He is staying with me now, harvest begins tomorrow," Drew answered. "Well I just rang to tell you that Dad and I will be coming up Friday. You know how Dad is, always gets his farmers feet itchy about harvest time and wants to inspect the crops. Really he just wants an excuse to hitch up the caravan and camp out at the weir on the creek for a week or two and go off and look at the birds," she said. Henry, Drew's father was an avid amateur ornithologist. Drew's heart nearly stopped when she said they would be visiting. 'This Friday!' he thought, 'Tess is coming. Dave and Tess live in my house! Don't worry we know you won't have a lot of time for us. Dad just misses the farm," she said in an understanding voice. After the shock of her news Drew's heart rate slowly came back to normal. After he had hung up he told Dave the news of his parents visit. Dave was good about it. "I'll shift all Tess and my stuff into the spare room," he had offered. But after a couple of moments thought Drew said, "No, he would at some time tell his mother about himself, Tess and Dave. Thanks for offering to do that but no, I don't want to lie to them." Dave stepped closer and held Drew in an embrace. "The only thing I am going to do is ask you and Tess to keep the bedroom tidy so that idle glances in won't tell them that the three of us share the same room. And I had better put the picture of us at the rock pool away, that would be a give away before I have 'the talk' with them," Drew told Dave. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday morning could not have gone any better. The crops were coming off the paddocks with excellent yields. There had been no break downs which were always a problem and Dave had taken to his task like an old hand. Jackson loved being on the farm. He was running around making and delivering sandwiches, chicken salads and thermos coffee to the drivers. In the early morning coolness he was working at staying in shape ...
