... and Jackson were sitting opposite each other at the table. Drew walked around behind Dave and handed him a beer then leaned down and kissed him on the top of the head. Dave looked up at Drew with a slightly puzzled look on his face. "I missed you this weekend," Drew said to him. He then sat down next to him and reached out and held his hand as they sipped their beers and the conversation continued. Jackson and Geoff saw and heard what Drew had just said and although it was staged by Drew it was actually heart felt. As they talked Jackson reached out and put his hand on Geoff's thigh. 'Wow,' thought Geoff, 'That is a big step for Jackson. That is how I want him to act.' They ate the meal and drank some more. After the initial reluctance both couples openly displayed affection to their partner for the rest of the evening. It felt comfortable and natural. It was agreed that Drew and Geoff would get together on Monday morning and they would check all the paddocks where the crops were close to being dry enough to harvest and they would prioritise the massive task that lay ahead. Drew knew some of the crop was ready before he had gone to the city, so harvest would start on Tuesday. Monday afternoon was taken up with a trip into town. Drew had arranged an appointment for Dave with the local police sergeant to have his drivers license endorsed to drive the fifteen ton truck. Drew and Geoff would take it in turns driving the combine harvester and carting the grain to on farm storage facilities. This involved loading and unloading a large trailer behind a tractor and driving to either Geoff's or Drew's farm. This grain would be stored in silos and sold when the prices were hopefully better later in the season. They would start work each day as soon as the temperature had warmed enough to dry any dew from the fields and work until after dark, so long as the atmosphere was dry. This would be their routine for the next four or five weeks unless it rained or there were days of extreme fire danger, when it was dangerous to be driving hot machinery through tinder dry crops. In both cases all work would cease. Standing in the shed now Drew realized that their worst fear was about to come true only three days into harvest and that rain at this stage was not a good omen. Monday night he'd returned his mothers telephone call. "Hi Mum, how are you?" he'd started. "Hello Andrew, so good to hear your voice. Did you have a nice weekend in the city?" "Yes Mum, what's news?" "I rang on Sunday afternoon. Did you get my message. I spoke to that nice young man you have working for you, Dave isn't it?" Drew had a few weeks previous told his mother that he ...
