... jogging along the farm tracks for mile after mile. He so enjoyed this environment, it was much nicer than running laps of a football field or through city streets. Now here it was, Friday one thirty in the afternoon. Drew walked across to the house and made a pot of coffee. The answering machine under the phone was blinking indicating that it had a message. Tess had rung at one. She had the afternoon off and was leaving the city. His parents were due at about three. Tess at four. He had already warned Tess of the surprise visit and not to be too overt with him, not that she would be that callous anyway. Taking a cup of the hot brew out onto the front verandas he spotted Dave turning into the drive way from the main road. The first large drops of rain hit the corrugated iron roof above his head. He watched as Dave drove past him with a wave and a smile and parked the truck next the tractor in the shed. Dave quickly gathered all the delivery dockets from the cab of the truck and stuffed them into the breast pocket of his shirt, jumped down from the cab and sprinted across the yard to avoid the coming rain. He took the veranda steps two at a time just as the rain started to bucket down. "Well that's that for today," said Drew, "I hope it clears before the folks get here. They won't want to set up camp in this and don't get me wrong, but I don't really want them to stay in the house tonight." "Look Tess and I can stay in one of the spare rooms, just say the word," Dave offered ...
... again, "We don't want to be the source of any problem with your parents before they even get to know us." "No, let's just wait and see how it goes first. Play it by ear today. I just have to get the chance to have a quiet talk with Mum," "Well I have to shower if you have declared the work day finished. I'm covered in grain dust and it is as itchy as all get out," Dave said, "That coffee smells good though." "Help yourself, there is a fresh pot in the kitchen," Drew said, "I'm going to watch the storm for a while. If it does stops raining soon I have to run a couple of bales of hay down to the ewes in the back paddock. It won't take me long." "I'll just put the delivery dockets on the desk in the office, okay," Dave said as he emptied his shirt pocket. "Yeah fine," Drew answered as Dave disappeared into the house. Drew stood and watched the rain fall. Lightning cracked a couple of times but he could see the summer storm would not last long. There was blue sky above the distant hills now and the rain was easing off very quickly. It was just a nuisance. The down pour would wet the crops and the sun and the breeze would have it dry again by night fall. Hopefully the light wind would stay up all night, a still night would mean increased humidity and the danger of mildew on the grain. He finished his cup and went inside. He could hear the shower water running. If this was earlier in the week he would not have let Dave undress with out some sort of sexual activity between them. ...
