... Aubrey Jessica's last name since I didn't want her to make assumptions about Jess based on her family reputation.

But still, Aubrey froze. I noticed she lost her glow as she stared at me in stunned silence. I didn't know what to make of her reaction. I felt myself growing anxious, my heart beating faster, and I wrapped my arms around myself. When I did so, Aubrey seemed to recompose herself, and she gave me a smile, but I knew that one wasn't real.

"That's great, Sisi!" she managed to say.

"Is there something wrong?" I asked, feeling extremely apprehensive.

"No," she lied. I knew she was lying. "I know Jessica Chandler."

"You're doing it again, Aubrey!" I said, getting up from the bed. "You're keeping something from me!"

"Okay, okay, I'll talk," she said, sounding nervous. "It's just me and Jessica don't get along well. She hates me!"

"Why would she hate you?" I asked, exasperated.

"I don't know, Sisi! That's just the way things are. Can we change the subject, please?"

Then I heard a knock on the door. I went to open it, and talking about the devil, Jessica was standing in my doorway. She frowned as she noticed how upset I was.

"I heard Aubrey's here," she said.

Aubrey stood up when she heard Jessica's voice and stood behind me. I looked to Aubrey and then back at Jessica. Aubrey looked pissed, but Jess looked unusually calm.

"Hey Aubrey!" Jess said, smiling. "Long time no see."

"Uhum," that was Aubrey's only answer.

    "I don't want you ...
... guys to fight!" I said, feeling like a pile of nerves. In my head, this meeting was going horribly wrong.

"Why would we?" Jess asked, looking confused.

"Well," I looked at them both, feeling myself get confused. "Aubrey said you hate her."

"Sienna!" Aubrey said in a reprimanding tone.

"What?" Jess said, frowning at me and then at Aubrey. "I don't hate you, Aubrey! Why would I ever hate you? You know what, let's sit down."

Aubrey's gaze sent knives in Jessica's direction as she entered and got herself comfortable on my bed. I hesitantly went ahead and sat by her side. Jessica scooted closer and wrapped one arm around me. Aubrey stared at us a little, making me feel uncomfortable, but eventually, she sat on the edge of the bed, her arms crossed in front of her. Her face looked cold; because of that, she resembled Mrs. Walker a lot. "So," Jess said, apparently trying to make conversation, "you guys close?"

"Very close!" I answered, since Aubrey wasn't going to. "I have two older sisters, and I really like both of them. But Aubrey and I are the closest. For a while, we even shared a room, even though our house had rooms for everyone, just to be able to hang out around each other more often."

"Great!" Jess answered awkwardly. "I'm an only child, so I've never had that."

The mood was heavy. I felt nauseous, and my anxiety was peaking. I wanted to cry because my dreamed reencounter with my big sister had gone so horribly wrong. I just wanted to have fun with ...
