... off the fancy sunglasses, I saw that her eyes were now puffy and red from crying. She saw me as she put her purse down, and glared daggers at me. I frowned back at her, and then it hit me. In an instant I realized our new situation. A smile slowly spread across my face.
"I bet you just loved this," she said to me. "Just how you always imagined it I'm sure."
"No, I can't say that I loved losing my father," I frowned. "And I never expected any of this. Dad didn't tell me anymore than he told you. I was just hoping he might have left me enough to pay rent somewhere in the city. I didn't know he was leaving me the house. Speaking of which, what are you doing here Barbara?"
"I live here you little shit," she said angrily. "Just because he left it to you doesn't change that."
"Of course it does," I laughed. "This is my house now Barbara, I have the paperwork to prove it. And I'm afraid you are no longer welcome here. Out of respect for my father, I'll give you twenty-four hours to pack your things and leave. I'll expect you to be gone by this time tomorrow."
"You can't do that!" she shouted, sounding horrified. "This is my house!"
"No Barbara, it's my house," I said with a big smile. "And you know, if you had been nicer to me. Not even nice, just nicer, I would let you stay here, at least until you could figure something else out. But you weren't nice, at all. You've been nothing but horrible to me for the last ten years."
"Jack, please, I've always been ...
... good to you," she said, and I let out a loud dry laugh. "This is my home. I can't leave. I would have no place to go."
"What is it you always like to say to me," I said with a devilish smirk. "You better start looking for a job, because you're going to have to be paying your own bills soon. Well Barb, for you soon is tomorrow."
"Jack, please, I was only joking," she said, her voice faltering slightly as she realized I was being serious. "I would never have kicked you out. We're family Jack. Which is why you can't throw me out either."
"Barbara, this is my house now," I said seriously. "Why on earth would I let you stay here?"
"Because I have nowhere else to go," she said with wide frightened eyes.
"I'm sure you'll figure something out," I said. "And you know what, I'll let you keep your Lexus. That way you'll have a place to sleep."
"Jack, please, you can't," she begged. "This is my home."
"Not anymore," I said haughtily. "You did this to yourself Barbara. Like I said, if you had been nice, or even just cordial, I would let you stay here. But you weren't. You were awful to me from the moment you married my dad."
"I can be nice," Barbara said, and I laughed out loud again.
"Too late," I scoffed, and returned to the TV. "You have nothing I want Barbara. You did when I was a kid, but not anymore. There is absolutely no reason for me to let you stay."
"Maybe I can give you a reason," Barbara said, in a soft gentle tone that I had never heard from her ...
