... Mat." He leaves rapidly, not giving Mat a chance to reply.

Steve's already in the shower when Karl makes it there. He hears Steve whistling his heart out.He called his daughter, and she's safe, thinks Karl, smiling.

"See you tomorrow, Karl." Steve disappears, not waiting for a reply.

A few minutes later, Karl walks up the stairs, and as he expected, Mat is again absorbed in his work. He's using his manual drafting table. Karl is again impressed by Mat's ability to draft Jules' dream projects so perfectly realistically. It's not a job to him; it's a passion. After watching him for a few moments, Karl silently approaches the young man; he's not listening to music this time. He gently puts a hand on Mat's shoulder and squeezes a little bit.

"Hey, Karl," he says, surprised. "Already?"

"You've worked enough for today, little guy." Karl says softly.

Mat's surprised by being called little guy. It's been a long time since Karl addressed him that way.

"You don't have to take me out for supper, Karl."

"I haven't talked to you in two or three weeks. Saying that I was too busy doesn't cut it. Jules expects us to be abreast of things, and clearly, I'm not. I should always make time for you. We have a lot of things to discuss; I want to know where you're at, and I like your company, Mathieu."

Mat saves his work, closes down his system and puts his coat on.Something's changed in Karl's attitude, Mat thinks.Perhaps it's just me. Wishful thinking.

Rosa is ...

... pleased to see them walk in for supper. There's a nice wood fire going in the fireplace, and she takes them to a quiet table near it. There are only a few tables occupied tonight. It's the quiet season, and the weather being so miserable keeps people away.

"I have freshly made pâté chinois, salmon on the grill, and steak-frites." Rosa says.

"Pâté chinois, please," immediately comes the answer in stereo.

Rosa laughs and leaves for the kitchen. A few minutes later, she brings two beers for her boys. Mat smiles and decides to have the beer for once. They clink bottles and take a good sip.

Rosa is back in less than five minutes with two large portions of hot pâté chinois, crispy on top, accompanied by a chef's salad, an assortment of salad dressing, and marinated beets. It's the perfect meal for a night like tonight.

Karl listens to Mat recount all the stuff they've been doing. He also mentions that the construction permits for phase 2 of the Humana project is expected within two weeks.

"Really?" Karl says, with a mixture of surprise and discomfort. "We have our hands full. Damn."

"Don't worry, Karl," Mat says to reassure him. "Jules said that he doesn't plan for this project to really start before late April. In the meantime, we will simply fence the entire block and do some surveying work. He thought of you and all the work that's already going on. He didn't want to disturb you, because it's not urgent, for once."

"Great guy, Jules," Karl says, relieved.
