... trying to clear his mind so he doesn't hurt Mat. He sits on one of the high stools set by the kitchen island.
"I'm not asking you to make a choice; it wouldn't be fair. I think you should take some time before you make any decision." Karl doesn't want this conversation to drag on and on. He gets up from the stool and walks to the end of the sofa.
"Do you love me?" Mats asks, surprising his guest.
"I like you a lot," Karl says. "But is it love? I don't know. We've been together only once. Was it just lust? I don't know. I've never experienced love before. My six-hour marriage to a woman who hates hairy guys didn't teach me a lot about love. I had sex—a lot of sex—until very recently with almost anybody who would have me. I've never loved anyone except my brother. That kind of love, I understand. But the love you ask about, I don't know."
Mat thinks he's in love with the rough-looking man standing at the end of the sofa, but he agrees with the assessment: it's too soon to tell. It could just be just lust, like it is for the other men in his life. He can't be sure.
Karl walks to the door. Before stepping out, he says, "When you're sure of your feelings for the chief, or one of the other men, or perhaps me, let me know."
Karl closes the door delicately. With great sadness filling his heart, he goes home.

... architecture. Completely absorbed by his work, he realizes that he missed lunch. Karl will be there any moment. He grabs a granola bar and rapidly wolfs it down; he keeps a few in his desk for precisely this kind of situation. He saves his current work and loads the suggested wood structural framing of the building after researching what's available and feasible on the market.
He hears the familiar two-steps-at-a-time sound that Karl makes as he's getting on the mezzanine where Mat works. He's got a thick folder full of papers. He approaches Mat with a big smile on his face and hands him the pile of information on wood structures made in Québec.
"How are you, Mat?" Karl asks.
"Busy as hell. Jules wants all that done ASAP. He'd like to submit his request for a permit by the end of this month."
"Well, let's get to it," says Karl, sitting down on the stool that Mat pushes towards him. "I've already designed a preliminary structure based on what's in there and on discussions I had with the engineers at Structure en Bois du Québec. Actually, they're the only ones who can give us what we want, according to your plans."
He pulls the folder and gets a folded piece of paper. He unfolds it and puts it in front of Mat.
"Whoa!" Mat exclaims. "This is amazing work. You did this by hand?"
"Of course." Karl answers. "SBQ claims they can make the large, complex beams and that they will be spectacular. We want the structure to show, so people can see the skeleton holding that ...
