... there he is, right in front of a silent Karl.
"Come in." Mat's low tone, warm and welcoming, hypnotizes the big guy. His heart is about to burst.
"Euh, I... Euh."
"Come in, Karl. I have things to tell you."
Karl enters Mat's nest. He follows Mat to the living room, and they each pick a comfortable seat placed side by side, facing the plush sofa, with the kitchen as a background, and the fireplace to their left. The high, sloped ceiling with its old, exposed ancient rafters adds a lot of charm and warmth to the peaceful room. It eases Karl's stress.
"Would you like a beer, a coffee, or something else?" Mat seems a bit uncomfortable under Karl's stare; it's penetrating, and can be quite intimidating to those who don't know him — or who have crossed him.
"No, thanks, Mat, " Karl says calmly, sensing Mat's discomfort.
Not knowing how to broach the subject of his intimate life, Mat plunges right into it.
"I apologize for not discussing with you, certain aspects of my life..."
Karl interrupts Mat. "You don't have to. I don't need to know how many boyfriends you had or have at the moment. I misinterpreted our situation. Seeing that man, purely by accident, as I was walking back home after having supper at Bills, like I do most of the time, stirred me more than expected. And, as a result, I acted like a child, and for that, I'm very sorry."
Mat remains silent as Karl rubs his three-day shadow with his rough hand. Karl isn't sure how to continue. Mat ...
... sees it in his eyes, and decides to continue with what he had planned to say.
"You're right, I don't have to tell you how I run my love life, but I will. I currently have three men with whom I have relationships with. The chief is one of them. Since he lives in Montréal, he visits me regularly depending on what's going on. He's got to be very careful, so our friendship doesn't become a headline. Do I love him? No, and I told him so. I like him and the sex that comes with it. He's married but separated, and he has three kids."
Mat takes a moment, amazed by Karl's stoic physiognomy. His eyes never waiver from Mat's. He gets up, goes to the kitchen, and grabs two beers. Karl leaves his unopened on the table that separates the two chairs. Mat plows on with his story.
"The other two men whom I've met on some business trips before I joined Jules' firm, I see them twice or maybe three times a year. I like them; they are nice, older, mature gentlemen. That's it."
Karl remains silent and keeps staring. Mat decides to expose his feelings for Karl.
"Not one of them makes me feel like you do. Not even close. You just didn't have sex with me, Karl; you made love to me. I felt you deeply. I responded to you with passion."
Karl suddenly gets up. He walks around the coffee table and behind the sofa.
"Yes, you did," he says, remembering that night. "But I'm not the kind of man who will share his lover with somebody else. I can't do that."
He pauses for a few moments, ...
