... to Bill's volubility. He's always found him to be witty and funny, and very much enjoys the tales he spins. He never makes fun of or diminishes his customers in any way when he recounts certain anecdotes about them.

Karl looks at his watch. It reads 9:20 p.m.

"Don't fret it, Karl." Bill softly tells his friend. "I have all the time in the world for a good friend like you. You've been pensive lately. Something's bothering you."

Bill patiently waits for Karl's answer. He knows his friend is the big, silent type. It's all in his eyes โ€” those sharp, penetrating green eyes. He gets up and goes to the bar, where he grabs two cold beers. He locks the door on his way back, sets a beer bottle in front of Karl, and sits across from him. He opens his bottle, as does Karl. He takes a sip. Karl doesn't.

"You know that young man, Mat?" Karl finally mutters.

"Yeah. You had supper here a little while ago." Bill leaves it at that, letting Karl set the pace.

"I like him. A lot. After that supper, he invited me for a nightcap. I stayed all night. The most incredible night I ever had in bed." Karl stops, realizing what he's saying.

Bill feels his friend's sudden surprise. "Hey, I don't judge. I did notice your attraction to that young man that night."

"I trust you, Bill. That's very personal โ€” very intimate. I'm surprised I said that."

"You need to get this out" Bill says with compassion. "Continue."

"I never had that kind of feeling for anyone before. Never. Last ...
... Monday, I asked if he wanted to have supper here. He said he had a friend coming over. So, I came alone, as usual. When I returned home, I saw a big guy enter Mat's place โ€” he lives a few doors down the street โ€” and I recognized the man. It seemed obvious that he's more than a friend to Mat. So, like a frustrated teenager, I've been avoiding him since."

Karl takes a large gulp of his beer, puts his elbows on the table, and continues.

"He texted me earlier โ€” business matters. Then he asked if anything was bothering me. I replied that I saw so-and-so enter his place. He asked if we could meet to talk. That's where I'm at. I don't know what the hell I should do. One thing is sure, Bill: I won't play second violin or be another one of his fuck buddies."

Bill looks at Karl, leans forward, and quietly tells him, "You care about him. You want him. You go talk to him. If not, why bother?" Then he sits back and takes another sip of beer. "And, big guy, don't wait. Go knock on his door. If you really care about him, he must be worth a little effort on your part."

Bill gets up, followed by Karl. He unlocks the door and firmly tap his friend on the back.

"Thanks," Karl says as he starts to walk down the street.

A few minutes later. Kar is standing in front of Mat's door. He lifts his hand, hesitates, and lowers it. Bill's right; he's worth fighting for. He firmly knocks on the door.

A few moments later, he hears Mat coming down the stairs. The door opens, and ...
