... hadn't even considered the possibility getting her or anyone else pregnant until now and the reality of it is overwhelming. He looks at her, wanting to reassure her, but he's not sure what to say.

"One final question, Emma, before we move on. Do you find Jack physically attractive?"

The question catches her off guard, and she blushes even harder. "Um...I...I mean, he's...he's not bad-looking. I guess." She looks down at her lap, feeling even more embarrassed now.

"Do you think he's handsome?"

Emma glances up at Jack, her cheeks flushing even deeper. "Yeah," she admits quietly. "He's...he's very handsome. And kind." She takes a deep breath, feeling herself grow even more aroused despite her fears. "But...but it's not just that. It's...it's like we're connected, you know? I feel like we could...we could be good together, despite everything, if that...." her voice hitches. "If that's what he wants."

Jack listens to her words carefully as he struggles with a maelstrom of his own emotions. He's honored that she thinks he's handsome, and he's touched by her admission that they could be good together. But he also understands the fear and uncertainty that she's feeling, and he knows there's only one thing he can do about it: man up and take responsibility.

"Emma," he begins, "I...I think we both feel scared and overwhelmed right now. And it's normal to feel that way. But I want you to know that...that I'm not just going to abandon you after, um..." His face ...

... reddens. "After we do it. I'll do my best to take care of you."

That gest another wave of surprise murmurs from the class. Emma's eyes widen, and even the teacher looks surprised. "Jack," he says carefully, "Are you saying you want to be involved with Emma and the baby? You are not obligated to do so by anyone, not me or the school. Think very carefully about this, it is not something you can just take back and it would be cruel to get Emma's hopes up only to change your mind later. Are you sure?"

Emma can't hide the raw, wild hope on her face as she waits for Jack's answer.

"Yes," he says, meeting her gaze. His voice is soft, but there's a determination in his words that makes it clear he means every word. "Trust me, I understand the seriousness of this situation and I'm not making this decision lightly. But...yeah. The more I think about it, the more I want to be involved all the way. It's true that we don't know each other well, but I want to be there for both her and the child. I want to support her through this, and be a part of our child's life she's okay with it. How can I look at myself in the mirror if I do otherwise?"

Emma nearly collapses with relief and throws her arms around him. She's crying again, but this time they are tears of relief, not tears of sadness and humiliation. "Of course I want that," she says, her voice ragged with raw emotion. "Thank you, Jack, thank you so much, you have no idea how much this means to me!"
