... was already in love with you." We enjoyed dinner and another glass of wine, then left and went outside. "Did you bring more comfortable shoes this time?" I asked her. She laughed, remembering how her feet were hurting in the heels she wore on our first date. "Marginally more comfortable," she said, taking my arm as I led her down the sidewalk. We walked down to a small square with a fountain. In the evening time, it was lit up and beautiful, and we stopped in front of it. My heart thumping out of my chest, I nodded my head. She was confused at first, but when she saw me looking over her shoulder, she turned to look as well. My dad and Julie were walking up, my father beaming and my sister positively bouncing, unable to hide her excitement. Right behind them was my mother, arm in arm with Carly's mother, who I'd flown down this morning. Beth and Susan walked up behind them, followed by a group of Carly's friends from work. My dad came over to me. "Good job, buddy," he said, patting me on the back, "That's a helluva rock you just put on her finger." "Thanks," I said. "That's a helluva woman I just gave that rock to." He gave me a knowing smile, and walked over to Carly, who was talking excitedly with Susan and Beth, both of them admiring her ring. As he walked toward her, she broke off her conversation and walked into his embrace, staying there for a long time. She finally had someone that loved her like a father is supposed to love their daughter. Julie slid up to my side and put her arm around my waist. I put mine around her shoulder and hugged her. "Told you the nails were a good idea," flashing me her own. I nudged her ...
