... conversation was over, we had been there for 3 hours. It was healthy for both women, and they were really looking forward to seeing each other soon, discussing plans for Laura to fly down to Houston for a visit, and commitments to talk on the phone a few times a week. Standing on the front porch, Carly gave her mother a hug. They stayed in the embrace for a while, and didn't see as I took my phone out and captured the moment. I felt like it was important, and I could keep it as a reminder for Carly of just how far she'd really come in a matter of months. They said their goodbyes and Carly went to the car.

I stepped toward Laura and gave her a hug as well.

"I appreciate you being receptive to Carly, and to me as well," I said sincerely.

"Thank you for convincing her to give me a chance," Laura said, tearing up.

"I know the both of you are planning a visit, but I'd like for you to be there when I propose to her. I'll let you know when that is. Hopefully, you'll be able to make it."

"Nothing on earth would stop me from being there, Jason," she said. I hugged her again and got in the car, driving to the airport to catch our flight.

I was finished with my shift in the ER, and I went to the break room to get my stuff and head home. When I checked my phone, I saw a text from a number I didn't recognize.

-Jason, this is Susan. Could you please call me when you get a chance?

As soon as I got into my car, I called her. I hadn't heard from ...

... Carly all day, which wasn't unusual, but a text from Susan had me worried. She picked up.

"Hey, Jason, how are you?" She said.

"I'm good, just got off work and saw your message. Is everything ok?" I asked.

"Oh, sorry! More than ok, Jason. They're great. The reason I wanted to talk to you is because I thought you might want to be there when I tell Carly that she's going to be a lawyer!"

Excitement and pride tore through me. I knew this would be a dream come true for Carly. "Absolutely! When are you going to tell her?" I asked.

"Planning on it tomorrow, just whenever you can get to the office," Susan replied.

I made plans with Susan and set a time, wished her a good evening and hung up.

When I got home, I must have been showing the effects of the news on my face, because Carly asked why I was in such a 'chipper' mood, to use her words.

"You mean to tell me that I shouldn't be thrilled every day when I get to come home to such a wonderful, beautiful, smart, sexy woman such as yourself?" I asked, smiling wide at her. She wasn't buying the bullshit I was selling, but grinned nonetheless at the compliment.

"Just heard some good news about a patient," I said.

"Since when do you follow up on patients?" She asked curiously.

"Well," I said, "There was this one not long ago that I followed up on, and I ended up falling in love! Figured I might try my luck again!"

That earned me a swat on the arm, and a giggle.
