... don't quite work like they used to." Then raised his arm up like he was flexing a bicep.

I laughed out loud, enjoying his banter with Carly. He knew how to turn on the charm, and Carly smiled big at him.

"Mr. Marshall, I believe you're right!" She said, winking at him.

"He looks a helluva lot nicer than that piece of work chained up at that table," Mr. Marshall said.

"Thank you, sir. That, he is," Carly said.

"Well, best of luck, miss. I'm glad you're back on your feet. If my wife finds out I've been flirting with a young pretty girl she won't feed me for a week!" Mr. Marshall said.

Carly gave him a hug. "Thank you so much, Mr. Marshall."

As he started walking off, he stopped one more time and turned around.

    "Miss?" He said.

    "Yes sir?"

"They said that guy beat you up because you was born a boy. That true?" He said.

    Carly hesitated for a second.

    "Yes, sir. I was."

Mr. Marshall scratched his head and frowned. "Don't make any sense... anyone can see you're the belle of the ball now, who gives a damn what you used to be?"

Carly's eyes lit up, and she hugged him again. "Thank you, sir."

"Alright, I'm really in trouble now," he said, looking at his watch. "Bye now," he said, shuffling off.

Carly walked up to me, with a strange smile on her face.

    "That," she said, "was unexpected."

"Yeah, sometimes people surprise you," I said.

The courtroom door opened and Beth walked out, followed by John.

    "Alright, I'm done," John ...
... said. There's a ten minute recess and then the defense will get started. Expect to be called up at some point.

The door opened at the end of the hallway, and Carly looked down to see what the noise was. She stood, seeing, but not believing.

Her army came. My mother, father, and Julie, followed by Brandi, and June. They surrounded her and all hugged her, encouraging and reassuring her. John, Susan, Beth and I all stood back to admire the scene.

"Jason, how?" was all she could get out, speechless that they had all showed up.

"It's simple, really. These people all care about you," I said, pointing to the crowd. "They want to be here and show their support for you, and let you know they're in your corner."

She rushed into my arms and put her head on my chest.

    "Thank you, Jason..." she said.

The Bailiff opened the door and announced that court was about to resume. The entire crowd piled into the seating behind the prosecutor's desk, every one of them staring daggers into Rick, who was looking dumbfounded. His attorney asked to have the courtroom cleared, and was quickly denied by the judge. He banged the gavel and instructed the defense to start.

The defense attorney laid out his arguments. It was the poorest excuse for a defense imaginable, the attorney attempting to portray Rick as a victim and Carly as an aggressor, even saying that Rick was in fear that he would be sexually assaulted by her. He then tried to say that his client was violently accosted by me ...
