... before I begin opening statements, the state is bringing additional charges against the defendant. Count two of this docket will be Intimidation of a Witness, and count three will be violation of a protective order." The judge accepted the new charges onto the record and banged his gavel. "Counselor, proceed with your opening statement." "Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury, the defense is going to tell you this morning that their client feared for his own safety, and acted in his own defense. The facts of this case will reveal that this is not even close to the truth of the matter. The defendant savagely beat this woman and left her to die. Had a Good Samaritan not come along, there is a chance that she could have. He then told officers that he beat her because she said, in his own words, that she was 'a tranny'. I am convinced that today you will take responsible actions and find the defendant guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt." John finished his opening, and sat down to let the defense make opening statements. Rick was in a borrowed suit that was too big for him, and was shackled because of Carly's presence in the courtroom. As he entered, Carly caught Beth's eye. She closed the door and remained in the hall for a moment. "That's the man that found you. He called 911." Beth said. It had never occurred to Carly that she would ever see him. Of all the people involved, he was probably the one directly responsible for saving her life. His part didn't take long. Less than 10 minutes later, the door opened he came shuffling back out. Carly stood. "Excuse me... Mr. Marshall?" she asked, walking up to him. As his eyes turned to her face, he smiled at her. "I...I'm Carly Sims. I was the one in the garage. Thank you for finding me... and thank you for caring enough to call someone about it. You saved my life." The old man leaned on his cane. "Anytime, miss. That your boyfriend?" He asked, nodding his head toward Jason. "Yes, sir," Carly said. "He was actually the nurse at the hospital. I'm surrounded by both of my heroes!" "Well," Mr. Marshall said with a sly smile, "Had I been able to pick you up, I'da rescued you myself and I'd be your boyfriend, that big boy over there'd just be outta luck! He better be glad these muscles ...
