... there if you could pronounce it properly. She told me how.

Well I certainly pulled out all the stops getting ready for that evening as I so wanted Ronnie to be proud of me. I wore a blue satin gown that fell just short of my knees, tan tights, black patent courts, black bolero and of course, his necklace, which I only ever took off for bed and washing. Ronnie was delighted when I arrived, his face beaming as we linked arms and walked in. The Belle Epoque was the best restaurant in the county by a long way and everyone dressed up when they went there. Ronnie ordered for me and surreptitiously helped me out when I simply had no clue how to even begin eating the lobster. He was so good to me and made me so happy.

Over coffee he suddenly took on a serious note and began to talk about my future and his. Now I was so in love with Karen my heart missed a beat. I was so concerned that he wanted to change the status of our relationship and I knew I could not do it. I had made all this effort this evening to look my best so he would be proud of me, not because I wanted him to marry me or anything. When he looked me in the eye and told me how much I meant to him and how he wanted to always be there for me. I could barely answer. He took my hand. I felt goosebumps run down my spine. I wanted to scream 'please don't spoil it!' Then suddenly I felt a bit sick and dizzy. Maybe it was the wine, I had drunk a lot because of the way the conversation had been going. I excused myself and ...
... went to the ladies. When I got back he looked so concerned and asked if I was alright. I lied. I had calmed down as best I could and had prepared myself for the gentlest of let-downs, but still a big no.

I called Karen when I got back and she asked me if I was OK as she could feel the emotion and tell I was a little inebriated. I needed to hear her voice and know I was seeing her tomorrow. That helped me relax and sleep, but I still had a restless night. In the morning I gathered Mom, Maureen and Eileen around the breakfast table and told them what had happened. They showed me a document that Ronnie had sent over.

I had got it so wrong with Ronnie. What he wanted to do was invest some of his money in the ranch. Well, when I say invest, he basically just wanted to fund things, and when I say the ranch, it was primarily for me. He wanted nothing in return other than the pleasure of being allowed to share in my success. Mom laughed. "I thought he was going to ask you to marry him but, wow, this is the best proposal any man could give you!"

I had felt such a fool, suspecting that he had an ulterior motive. He was so pure of thought that I rushed over to see him and told him that I already felt like I was his daughter and that I would always be there for him. He had squeezed my hand and given me a small box. It had some silver horseshoe earrings that went exactly with my necklace. OMG, he had had them specially made as well! I so wanted to be more than his pretend daughter ...
