... wearing flip flops, shorts and a tank top with the New Orleans Saints' logo. His head was bald but he had a closely cropped beard. His skin was so dark black that she couldn't make out the tattoos on his well-muscled arms. He hung up his phone with obvious agitation and pushed it into his pocket. Then he tossed the pool cleaning net aside and sat down in one of the loungers and put a forearm over his face. Then he just sat there. Haden watched him for a minute, waiting to see if he'd go back to cleaning the pool. But he didn't. Instead, he began texting on his phone every few minutes while he just laid there. For some reason, it was bothering Haden. She'd made appointments to hire help around the house and she sincerely hoped that this man wasn't on Penny's list of people she used. “Excuse me.” Haden called out to him. “Hey there. Mister pool guy.” The man half turned on the chaise lounge and shielded his eyes. “What?” He said in a way that told Haden he wasn't even sure who was addressing him. “Shouldn't you be working? She considered leaving a note on the Bruns door. “No, he'd probably find it and just throw it away.” She considered calling the police. “No, they wouldn't do anything. He hasn't broken a law.” She thought about telling Penny. Maybe she'd stop using him for their pool service. But nothing seemed on point and the more she perseverated over it, the more it just all seemed futile. Finally, she opened up the liquor cabinet and made herself a gin and tonic. When she went back out pool side, she took a few big sips of her drink and was thankful not to see or hear anything from the rude man across the fence. She put on another coat of nail polish and went back to reading her book. “Ma'am?” Her dreams were black and green and hot. “Ma'am?” There was a wetness and a stickyness all around her. She felt like she was choking. But there was a pleasant warmth all through her as well. “Ma'am?” Haden's eyes snapped open. She was still in the chaise lounge. How long had she been asl**p? The sun was still up. Had she burned? She looked to her ...
