College was hard. I guess you never understand that until you get there. And even if San Diego State College wasn't the best in the state the professors were good, and strict. High school was a breeze, but the courses I was taking now were forcing me to do homework every night. I even had to do some work on the weekends. Hardly time to relax at all. But I managed to find a little play time. California had the prettiest girls and women in the world. Everyone knew that. And the college had lots of lookers walking around. I enjoyed just sitting on a bench and watching them walk by in their sleeveless sundresses giving me glimpses of their tanned legs. And sometimes I would catch a look at some soft breast flesh when they raised their arms up. A few girls were already deciding they didn't need bras. It was fun. None of them were as pretty as my stepmother, Cindy. I was thinking of her that weekend. I had just got an essay back and I had only received a C on it. It was discouraging. Maggie told me is was no big deal. Everyone took awhile to get in the right frame of mind for college. She knew I would do alright soon. But I didn't know that. I wanted to talk to Cindy. Mrs. Longtree had one phone in the house. It was downstairs in the living room. We were allowed to receive calls, and to make them if we placed a quarter in the cookie jar on the refrigerator in the kitchen. I put a coin in the jar and went in to call home that Saturday morning. The phone rang in our bungalow about ...

"Oh no, I don't really have too much free time now. Say, could I talk to Cindy a second?" "Yeah, sure. I think she's in the can. Wait a minute." In another minute she came on. Her worried voice was sweet, like music to me. "Peter, what's wrong? Are you alright?" "It's okay, Cindy. So, could I come down today for awhile? I need to talk." "Yes. Your dad's going fishing. Did you want to talk to him too? I can tell him to stay home." "No, no. That's fine. No. I wanted to talk to you, Cindy." She paused. "You there?" "Of course, Peter. You come down. I'm making your dad some food now. He'll be gone by the time you get here. I'll make you lunch. Are you hungry?" I laughed. "I think I'm always hungry. But I'll be there in an hour or so. I have to catch the bus." "Okay. Good. Well, I'll be here, like always. Bye sweetie." I could hear the smile in her voice as I hung up the phone. By the time the bus took me south to Chula Vista I was wondering if I was being silly. I mean, Maggie was right. I just needed to get my feet on the ground. I could do the work in college. I knew that. Oh well. No matter. It gave me an excuse to see Cindy. I opened the unlocked front door and went through the arch into the kitchen. I figured Cindy would be there. She was turning towards me, having heard the door open and close. She smiled as she ...
