... little alcove and one of the security guys fumbled for a key, but before he found it, his friend smashed the glass with his gun. One of them grabbed the hose and someone must have switched it on, because water began dripping out. They headed back towards the fire. I stood there, dazed and blank, wondering whether I could help in any way. I could hear voices yelling at each other and when I walked out onto the casino floor, people were only just starting to exit. Thick, oppressive, black smoke was pluming in behind me, crawling between tables and startling everyone. People were knocking over chairs, falling over in their haste to get out. The fire alarm finally started ringing and it was excruciatingly high-pitched. Some of the sprinklers were going which seemed pointless, since from the casino, you couldn’t see any fire, only smoke. The fire department hadn’t even arrived yet. For all I knew, the whole casino could burn to the ground. “Keep moving, sir. Head towards the exit.” A beefy security guy gave me a shove towards the glass doors that opened onto Flamingo Road. I started walking towards them, picking my way through overturned chairs and personal belongings. The casino floor was almost empty of people by now, but the smoke was hurting my eyes and it was rising fast. Please, help me.” I looked back towards Expresso and smoke was really billowing out now. The flames had started to burst through and all the lights in the casino suddenly went out. I felt a cold, sickly sense of fear. I wanted to get out, but at the same time, I didn’t want to leave anyone else, so I followed the woman up towards the executive offices. She was babbling on about something, money and her husband and I didn’t take in any of it. I didn’t know why she was talking; maybe it was her way of keeping the fear at bay. She wasn’t walking properly and it was only when we got into the corridor on the second floor that I saw her hands were tied behind her back. “What the hell?” I grabbed at her, haphazardly undoing the rope as we hurried along and she laughed embarrassedly. “It was a stupid game,” she said. “I don’t know. I mean, I can’t help who I am. I can only hide it. There’s nothing wrong with being who you are, is there? It’s not like it would hurt him. I’m just a normal girl. I mean, sure maybe a bit messed-up but isn’t everyone?” I finally got the rope undone and dropped it on the floor as we stopped at the door of an office. She gave me a quick, nervous smile and all of a sudden I knew who she was. “You’re Arthur Platinum’s wife!” Arthur Platinum was the owner of ...
