"No. I disagree." Charlotte sounded unsure in her own words, as though she were piecing together her rebuttal on the spot. "Why do you run?"

"Because it makes me proud."

"Because it makes you feel good."

"I- it-" Hayley stuttered. "I feel good because I accomplished something. It makes me better. Masturbation feels good because biology incentivizes reproduction. Animals can cum. They can't win gold medals."

"But you can doboth, Hayley. They're not mutually exclusive. I agree that delayed gratification - bettering yourself - leads to a better life, but indulgence doesn't always come at the expense of later happiness."

"The tradeoff is variable. The future happiness I sacrifice by eating a single slice of cake tonight is small, almost negligible. But it has an actual impact on my happiness right now. It doesn't become an issue until I choose to eat anentire chocolate cake for dinner. It's like, for every slice I have, my present happiness grows at a fixed rate, maybe even logarithmically, but my future happiness declines at an exponential rate. There exists a point at which the two lines intersect, and everything before that point represents positive ...

Hayley was laying back on her elbows now, having set her tea on the nightstand, looking at Charlotte skeptically. "So...I'm supposed to run a calculation every time I want to indulge in something?"

Charlotte laughed, more at the absurdity of her explanation than Hayley's comment. "No, you don't need to be that precise. My point is just that it's okay to enjoy 'base desires.' That's part of the fun of life. I mean, take Love Island for example. You could have been exercising or studying instead of watching all those episodes, and your future happiness would be higher, but barely. It's outweighed by the enjoyment you feel now, while watching them. Can you imagine how boring life would be if we were always focused on the future? If we never let ourselves enjoy the moment?" Hayley was sporting a reluctant smile. "Leave it to an engineer to explain happiness in mathematical terms."

Charlotte giggled.

"You don't think that's all a little hedonistic? Always seeking to maximize pleasure?" Hayley continued.

"I don't know. Call me cynical, but I think that's all life is. Even people who devote their lives to others do so because it fulfils them more than anything else. It makes them the happiest. Everybody just has their own balance."

"What if I've already found mine?"

"Hayley, you're one of the smartest people I've ever met, but a 5th grader could see that you haven't found yours."
