    ... living there.

"Oh right, you probably didn't hear when you were off at school. The Johnson's got a divorce. Jocelyn dropped out of college and moved in with her boyfriend; who knows what she sees in him? Not sure what Dan did, but Heather took Jason and they moved out of state. A fresh start is what I expect she wanted."

Ten minutes later, I was laying on my bed and thinking about Heather when I heard my phone ding.

It was a text message from Heather.

"ben, i wanted to tell u before, but i just couldnt bring myself to do it. i'm divorced now and moved away with Jason to start a new life. ill always treasure our time together, but i want u to forget about me and go meet that special someone unless you have already. u gave me the confidence to stand up for my rights with dan and im seeking my happiness for the first time in a long time. i owe a lot of that to u. u will always have a special place in my heart, ben."

I stared at my phone for many minutes, not knowing what to say.

Finally, I texted, "heather, u are the ...
... most amazing woman and i know u will find someone that will treat u the way u should be. i will never forget our summer together and wish u only the best in the future."

My last words seemed hokey, but I just couldn't think of what else to say.

    "thank you"

"thank you, heather. ill miss you."

    "me too"

    "me too back"

Heather was right, by the way. I had already met that special someone and when I went back to school for my Junior year, I immediately set out to see Michelle, whom I had barely gotten to know my sophomore year. We started dating and we were married almost immediately after we graduated college. We've been happily married for eight years and have two great kids.

I don't regret my time with Heather nor do I regret moving on with my life. I love my life and family now dearly. Still, I do look back at that first summer break with fondness, knowing it truly was a summer to remember.

"Ready or not, here I come!" I yelled out as I ran to the pool and did my best to splash my whole family with a huge cannonball.
