... summer was over and, during our last time together before I left, I said, "Heather, I know we are in two completely different phases in our lives, but do you think there's a chance?"

"No, Ben, I don't think so. Look, you're a great guy, but if we were to be together for real, it probably would be bad for both of us and definitely bad for you."

    "But, Heather..."

"Ben, let it go. I've enjoyed our time together immensely. I needed what you brought me, in more ways than one, but I think we need to be realistic."

"I don't want to be realistic."

"Ben, you will go back to college and find yourself a nice girl. One your own age. I'll, um, figure something out."

"Alright. But I'm coming home next summer and I'll want to see you."

    "I don't know, Ben. Maybe."

I knew she was speaking wise words, but my heart didn't want to hear it.

"I guess I'll have to take maybe."

"And, Ben. No texting while you're at college. I want you to be free when you're there. Then when we get to next summer, let's just see how things are."

    "Okay."

It's amazing how you can get so close to someone so quickly. I'm sure a lot of that came from the sense that I was saving her from a loveless marriage or maybe it was easier to fall deeply for someone when they were mature in their feelings and the way they treated people. Did I love Heather? I wasn't sure, but I knew I cared about her greatly and it was more than just the great sex.

I grabbed her and pulled her naked body ...
... close to mine as I enjoyed my last bit of time with her that summer.

    Epilogue

    "Dad?"

I was staring at the spreadsheet wondering where all the money I made went.

    "Huh?"

"Dad, you said you would come swimming after you got done with your work. Are you done yet?"

"What? Yeah, okay. Let me go get on my suit. Tell your mom and sister I will be out in a few minutes."

Going upstairs to my bedroom, I put my suit on and stared down at the pool. I had a great view of my lovely wife and two children splashing and having fun. I guess I've always loved the pool. I wondered if that love had started the summer of my freshman year of college.

From time to time, especially when I look down at our pool, my mind drifts back to that summer. That wild, wonderful summer. I chuckled with joy about how my pool cleaning and lawn mowing turned into the craziest, hottest summer of my young life. And, of course, that led me to thinking about Heather.

It was so long ago now, but some of those moments are seared into my mind. My thoughts drifted back to my second year in college.

That second year of school was busy and I kept my promise not to text Heather. I met a really nice girl right before the year ended, but we didn't even have time to go on a date before the semester ended, so I was hoping I could pick things back up with Heather.

I remember my disappointment when I found out from my mom that they had moved away and there was a new family ...
