Chapter 3 From the Patient Case History of Susan Richards Dr. Tamara Watkins, Ph.D, ABPP, APA Tuesday 30 th September, 2014 (Transcribed from voice recording) The time is 3:35 PM and the date is Tuesday the 30th of September, 2014. This recording is for the case history of a Susan Richards, case number 2014-133-TW, follow-up consultation number two. I think I had a breakthrough with Susan today. The erotica that she wrote last week indicated some internal conflict between heterosexual and lesbian fantasies. Even though the story contained a man and woman engaged in an ostensibly heterosexual act, the flavour was definitely lesbian – or bisexual at best. The male character of the soldier was a mere shadow compared to the vivid and colourful descriptions of the women – especially Anja – and the narrative was at pains to point out that Anja’s orgasm was achieved almost completely under Sasha ministrations. It is interesting that a woman who declares herself to be heterosexual would write such a fantasy, although it is by no means unheard of; the fantasies we like to think about are not always aligned to those we would actually like to perform. This writing exercise really only becomes significant in light of Susan’s other symptoms, namely the periods of anxiety as well as the episodes of thought-block that I witnessed during our interviews. Since re-reading her fantasy I have listened again to the tapes of our two previous sessions to review the context around those incidents ...
... of thought-block. The first when she was confused about whether she had ever achieved orgasm; and the other about the breakup with her college boyfriend. Prior to today’s session, I had no inkling that these two were related; and I would probably still be in the dark had I chosen not to follow up on the first one. Combined with her confused sexuality, these thought-blocks pointed to probable episodes of repressed memories – or at least repressed thoughts – which were manifesting in anxiety as they clamoured for the attention of her conscious mind. With Susan’s agreement, I wanted to see what she would remember or reveal under hypnosis. What follows is the recording of that session, beginning immediately after I had induced the hypnotic state. ~~~ DR TAMARA WATKINS: How are you feeling, Susan? SUSAN RICHARDS: Mmm. Good. TW: Relaxed? SR: Uh huh. TW: Any anxiety. SR: Mmm. No. I feel good. TW: That’s great. I want us to talk about some things that maybe you don’t want to think too much about. Will that be okay? SR: Umm. I’m not sure. TW: Well just remember that you’re in your very safe place and nothing can hurt you. Okay? SR: Okay. TW: Do you remember in our first session, I asked whether you had ever achieved orgasm? SR: Uh huh. TW: Do you remember what you told me? SR: Uh huh. I said ‘no’. TW: And then you told me something else. Do you remember what that was? SR: I said that I know what it should feel like; like it’s familiar. TW: That’s right. Do you still feel that way about ...
