    ... see."

"No problem, Jack!" Karl laughs. "We'll have an early lunch with you. It'll give us a chance to get to know each other. I'll have Mat call you just as soon as he wakes up."

"Okay, that's great. I'd appreciate it, but don't wake him up just for that. See you tomorrow. Good night."

"Good night, Jack." Karl ends the call.

Karl is moved by Jack's love for his son. He looks down at Mat, who's breathing slowly and deeply, unperturbed by the phone call. He kisses him on the top of his head, leans back, and lets Dreamland take over him, content to have his little guy in his arms.

An hour later, they both wake up. Karl tells Mat that his father called and that his older brother is coming tomorrow for supper.

"He wants me to cook, doesn't he?" Mat says smiling. "I'll call him. He won't sleep if I don't. I know him."

Tuesday, December 9, at the office.

Karl and Mat arrive very early at the office. Steve is already at work with a little tractor equipped with a snowblower. Fortunately, de la Commune Street was plowed, leaving huge snowbanks on either side of the street, but there's no traffic. The side streets, however, are still covered by more than one meter of snow. Foot trails can be seen here and there, but for the most part, the sidewalks and the streets are blanketed by an undisturbed, thick, fluffy white coat. It'll take a few days to clean up so much snow — a record snowfall this early in December. The clouds are moving out slowly, and the sun ...
... timidly tries to pierce through that grey mass. The temperature is getting colder by the minute.

Mat gets inside through the garage at the back of the building. The front entrance is not visible at all. The wind piled up the snow, which is at least eight feet high against the wall. He needs to run a test to ensure that the new system does everything it is supposed to do. He deems it better to do it now while all is quiet. Twenty minutes later, everything is up and running; the test goes through every function; assuming the program runs smoothly, Mat estimates It'll take a couple of hours. Mat calls his dad to reassure him.

"Hey, Dad," he says cheerfully. "How are you?"

"Hey, Mathieu!" Jack answers, happy to hear from his son. "So, you and Karl are coming for lunch, aren't you?"

"Of course. We'll be there soon. Karl can't wait to meet you, Dad."

"Same here, son. He seems to be a good man. Your big brother, your protector in chief, he's looking forward to meeting the one who swept his little brother off his feet." Jack starts laughing.

"I'm sure he is," Mat answers, laughing lightly. "They'll get along just fine. For tonight's supper, I have a bunch of steaks in the freezer and hamburger meat for the kids. I can make a bunch of fries in my air fryer. How's that? The stores might not be open today, so I hope I have everything we need. The city is paralyzed this morning. It'll take a while before it recovers from that much snow."

    "Steaks, yeah, that sounds ...
