... he says something that he shouldn't. "The big one is fucking you, is that it?"
"No one is fucking me, and from now on, that includes you." Mat turns around and leaves. He disappears around the corner in the opposite direction taken by Karl and Jules.
"Hey, Mat." The chief, stunned, can't believe he said such a stupid thing. He punches the door in front of him very hard, and he doesn't feel the breaking of the bones for a second or two. Then the pain hits him.
"Fucking shit! I broke my fucking hand!" He narrates his own life in that way that drunk people often do. As he heads for where his car is parked, he continues like so. "Christ! I really fucked up. He's angry now, but I'm sure he'll come around."

"Hey, Karl." Jules yells. "Wait up, will you?"
Karl slows down. Jules catches up.
"Hey, big guy. It's obvious that Mat didn't know that he would show up. You should have seen his face. He was furious."
Karl tries to shut down his emotions. His heart beats painfully fast and hard; he's not sure what causes such a reaction—pain or anger. He breaths deeply.

"Yes, I do," replies Karl. "We work well together, and I appreciate the quality of his work and his intelligence — as do you. Other than that, Mathieu can do with his private life as he sees fit. Thanks for the supper, Jules. It was great fun, and perhaps we found another great employee. Time will tell. Chloé's dad will think about what I told him. I'll let you know. Good night, my friend."
"Good night, Karl." Jules is taken aback by Karl's reaction. He crosses the street and walks down to his home, a block down, closer to the old port.
He knows, or rather feels strongly, his two employees. He knows Mat very well, and he's convinced that there's more there than just a good work relationship. Since neither one confides in him, however, he cannot be sure.

Tuesday, September 2, at the office, early morning.
After a beautiful summer — busy for some, vacations for others—everyone is back at work after the long Labour Day weekend.
Jules is hard at work with the help of his assistant, Elena, preparing the Pointe-Saint-Charles Humana Project Phase II for submission to finally obtain the construction permits after nearly thirteen months of bureaucratic nightmares. The permits for the ...
