... with anxiety and frustration, "You've got to forget Susan, you've got enough to deal with."
"Jim?" Susan's voice suddenly cut through his thoughts like a razor, startling him so badly that he jumped and nearly let out a scream. Did she hear him mutter her name?
"Sorry, I didn't mean to startle you," Susan said quickly, concern etching her features as she took in his tense posture and wild-eyed expression. "God Jim, you look like you've seen a ghost!"
"Uh, no, I'm fine," Jim lied, trying to force a smile as he met her gaze. "Just lost in thought, I guess."
"Clearly," Susan replied, her eyes narrowing slightly as she studied him. "Listen, I was actually just about to come find you. I could really use your help with that hedge fund account I've been struggling with, but...I don't know, maybe we should talk about what's going on with you first? You're obviously not okay."
Jim hesitated, his heart pounding in his chest as he weighed his options. He knew he should be honest with Susan, to confide in her and seek her support. But the thought of admitting his pain and humiliation – of letting her ...
... see just how broken he truly was – made him feel sick to his stomach. She would probably throw him out of her office in disgust.
"Let's just focus on the account," he said finally, forcing a weak smile as he stepped into her office. "It's important, and I could use the distraction."
"Jim, I'm really worried about you," Susan pressed, her voice soft but insistent as she closed the door behind them. "Please, just talk to me. Whatever it is, you don't have to do this alone."
But Jim had already made up his mind, and he shook his head stubbornly as he sat down at her desk. "I appreciate your concern, Susan, but I need to concentrate on work right now. Let's just get this account sorted out, okay?"
"Fine," Susan sighed, defeated for the moment, but determined not to give up on him entirely. As they began to dive into the complexities of the hedge fund, both of their minds were pulled in different directions – Jim's consumed by conflicting emotions and self-doubt, and Susan's filled with worry for the man she cared so deeply for, willing to fight for the truth even if it meant pushing him further away.
