... common is that at least one of the partners in their couples is involved in the legal sex industry."

"How did this all start?" Sarah asked.

"Frankly, I don't know," Rose replied. "I asked Kirsten. She said it was around the time Mike Peters established the firm. So I'm guessing that was about 30 years ago. Bob Johnson and the Hammers were hired about 15 years later. The convention is that, when LLP members leave or retire, their names are never again mentioned. It ensures absolute privacy in their subsequent life."

"Oh, sorry. I guess I should not have asked," Sarah said.

"That's okay, Sarah. No names mentioned, no harm done."

"I kind of felt Jim and I were party favours," Sarah then said.

Rose laughed. "In a way, you were, but I can assure you, you were much more than that. The most important thing is that you attended and achieved the purpose of your presence."

    "Which was?"

"You went the extra mile to improve our firm's customer relations."

"Kirsten told us we performed one type of special assignment but intimated there was another. Can you explain?" Sarah asked.

"The special assignment you did at the hotel was basically a business-oriented swingers' party," Rose replied. "They don't take place very often. Usually, one couple from the LLP attends on a rotating basis. Marc and I have to make up for our inability to attend Maurice's party by attending the next one, whenever that happens. It's always fun for whoever attends."

    "But," Rose ...
... continued, "the LLP is not a swingers' club. If swinging was all we wanted, we could have just as easily joined an established swingers' club and gone to it on our own time. When you had sex with the Johnsons and the Hammers, it was part of your induction into our secret sex club. Think of it as a form of team building and a way of proving your commitment to the LLP."

"Are you saying that swinging within the LLP is not usual?" Jim asked.

"Swinging between couples who are members of the LLP is a personal choice and is not considered an LLP activity. It so happens that Kirsten and Norbert are especially close to the Johnsons. They like to spend long weekends at each other's country homes where they swap partners. When they go on cruises, they even switch partners right after check-in and don't switch back until they disembark. People on the ship think Norbert and Janice, and Bob and Kirsten are the legitimate spouses."

"Wow," Jim said, "but how do you and Marc figure into their arrangement?"

"Only as members of the LLP. We don't swing with either couple, except as part of our induction. Don't get me wrong. We like them and get along with them just fine, but as couples, we actually don't have that much in common with them. I think it's a generational thing."

"But you and Sarah seem to be good friends with Kirsten," Jim observed.

"We are," she replied, "but it doesn't really extend to Norbert in the same way. Kirsten and I were real friends long before our involvement ...
