"If necessary, we can cook up some plausible cover story to explain the absence from the office or we tell them your project was so confidential in nature, you cannot be discussed, which would also be true. Confidentiality is respected by all JH&P staff."

Now it was making sense to Sarah and Jim.

"So, in answer to your other questions," Rose stated, "when you are on a special assignment, and this applies to both types, your pay and benefits. If you're seconded to do the assignment through Marc, you will be compensated accordingly."

The Coxwells seemed satisfied by Rose's reassurances about their jobs but Sarah still had questions about what could happen. "This stuff about the second special assignment seems a bit hazy to me."

"Yes, it is," Rose said. "Each case can be so different. Although we do our best to lay out all known parameters, there is still an element of unpredictability."

That was not precise enough for Sarah. "Maybe the best way for you to give us some idea of what it might be like is to tell us about a special assignment you have done." She emphasized the last 'you' meaning, of course, the Poisseys.

The Poissey's looked at each other.

"Tell them about our first assignment, Marc," Rose suggested. "You know, the one at the Plantation Club where white women wanted black men to make them pregnant while their cuckold husbands were watching."

Marc's story

As you now know, JH&P has among its clients a number of swinger and fetish clubs who take their legal and tax advice from the firm. Well, one day, Mike Peters called Rose and told her he wanted to speak to us together about a special assignment. So we arranged an after-hours meeting in his office. When we arrived, he told his secretary that we were not to be interrupted except in the case of a dire emergency. Then he locked the door, unplugged his phone and intercom and invited us to take a seat.

Then he informed us that he wanted us to go undercover as a couple at a new fetish club. Its proprietor wanted to include the club within the terms of the agreement which covered the rest of chain of establishments. As his group handles cases that might involve litigation or some form of illegal activity, he determined that it was necessary to check out this club anonymously. It was a job for LLP members.

He asked us to go undercover as a couple. Although the club is owned by an LLP associate member, we insisted on due diligence. The proprietor agreed, conceding that it was as much in her interest as the firm's to ensure that nothing illegal was taking place in her club.

"You're perfect for it," he told us. Then he told us about the nature of this fetish club. We were shocked.

"We want you to go undercover to check out this club. Only the proprietor will know that someone from LLP will be attending. She gave us these passes. They are the same passes as the ones ...
