... THE INQUISITION

Claire is interrogated by Mr. Lester and offered new hope.

"Hello Claire." Kay greeted her warmly, and then turned her gaze to Mr. Lester. "Husband" she said, her eyes now downcast. An odd tension filled the room that Claire did not understand but which she sensed clearly.

"Hello wife." said Mr. Lester. Only then did Nurse Lester look up again. Richard turned and closed the door, then moved to the small sitting area contained in the office.

"Claire, sit down there" he pointed at the low chair that was part of the nook. "Nurse Lester, please join us." His tone was commanding and Claire, despite her surprise, moved quickly to do as he had directed. Nurse Lester rose from her desk and then sat next to her husband on the small couch. Claire didn't understand why he was running this meeting but she stayed silent.

"Claire, my wife tells me you've been engaging in group sex with two sets of boys, six of them in all, for over five years with no hint of scandal. Then you do something stupid like fucking on school grounds. That is the first time you have done this, correct?"

"Yes Sir, it was."

"Explain to me what changed. Why, after all this time, did you take the risk?"

Claire didn't understand what was going on; couldn't see how Mr. Lester had anything to do with this situation other than that Nurse Lester was his wife. She hesitated but again, she figured she had nothing to lose really. And there was also the flatness of his demand, the no ...

... nonsense questioning. She felt almost compelled to respond with the complete truth.

"Sir, Alton's mother lost her job and we had no place to go. Alton had the key to the equipment shack because he helps out the coaches. We thought it would be safer fucking there than doing it outdoors."

"What about the other boys you have sex with?"

"Sir, Tod... uh, one of the boys, his mother got a new job and they moved last month. And the other boy's mother, well her hours got changed."

"These boys are all parented by their mothers?"

"Yes Sir. When Ted, uh, when he picked the boys to replace him and... When he chose my new boyfriends, he chose only guys living with divorced mother's so that we'd have lots of places to have sex after school, or on weekends when the mothers went on dates, or slept over at their boyfriend's houses."

"Why not just take a break? Find another boy to host your meetings?"

Why indeed, thought Claire. "Sir, we were looking for someone but... the risk of picking the wrong guy seemed bigger than using someplace like the shed. Guess that didn't work out."

"But why not just wait?"

"Nurse Lester, did you tell Mr. Lester everything?"

"Claire" said Richard with a certain tension, "Please understand that I am asking the questions. Please confine yourself to answering them. Again, why not just wait?"

Claire took a breath, embarrassed at being scolded by Mr. Lester, but she found herself unwilling to challenge his authority.
