... asked.
"Oh..." My sister's eyes left mine and drifted down to the floor, settling at her feet. She fidgeted with her sleeves nervously.
"Don't think about it, just say whats in your head."
"Yes," she muttered. "I was."
I took a step toward her and studied her face. She avoided my gaze and her cheeks turned bright pink, her breathing fast and shallow.
"Alice... are you not asexual?"
She swallowed hard. It was a dry swallow and it sounded painful.
"Tell me the truth."
She hesitated, her features twisting in embarrassment. She wrenched her gaze up to me again, forcing eye contact, and I saw her pupils twitching rapidly.
"I don't know what I am," she said.
Images of our various lewd activities poured into my head. The way she encouraged me to jerk off. The knowing smirk on her lips. The unexplained hardness in her nipples. The evasive answers. The intimate interest in Mom's sexual life. What was it all about?
"Allie," I began severely, "I really, REALLY need you to tell me the truth right now."
"Don't be angry with me, Devin--"
"I'm not angry!" I retorted, louder than I meant to say it. "I just need to know why you've been lying to me."
"It's not like that Devin, I promise!" She lowered her head and slouched back away from me, towards the door, fiddling with her fingers. "It's really complicated, you have to let me explain--"
"Is this a prank or something?"
"YOU'RE BEING MEAN TO ME!"
I loomed over her and sensed regret in her ...
... quivering form. I stared down into her crooked lenses, daring her to say it. She looked up into my face with puddling, puppy-like eyes.
"Who the fuck are you?" I asked.
Her bottom lip trembled. My question slammed into her like a freight train and I immediately regretted it. The beginnings of tears formed around the soft edges of her eyes and then there was defiance. That wayward, unapologetic side of Alice reared its petulant head in self-defense. She balled up her fists and opened her mouth to scream--
"I'M YOUR SISTER!"
--and bolted out the door again, this time considerably more flustered. Once again her feet stomped down the staircase, but now each step sounded angry. She was pissed. My sister was big mad and it was all my fault again. I had to go find her.
"Allie, wait up! Please don't go. I didn't mean to say it like that--"
When I stumbled down the staircase into the kitchen I was met by my very livid mother. Clad in her morning bathrobe, she cocked her hands on her hips and shot me a look of pure daggers.
"WHAT THE HELL DID YOU SAY TO YOUR SISTER?" she barked.
"Nothing Mom, we just had a stupid fight."
She shook her head and pointed to the back door. "Well, go on then! You know what you have to do when she gets like this."
"Yeah yeah, I know Mom," I said, already putting on my shoes.
In less than a minute I was circling the block in my car, scanning the sidewalks for signs of her. With Alice it was always a show of force. If she really ...
