... coughing, she said, "Must have gone down the wrong pipe. I did get woken up at some point, Mom. I don't remember why and I don't remember yelling at all. But I must have had a bad dream and when I yelled, that's what woke me up."
Her mother stared at her, not convinced, but she did not say anything else. Jo finished breakfast with her parents and went back to her room. Whenever she was confused or had something pressing on her mind, Jo went out to the backyard and kicked the soccer ball around.
The winter had been mild by New England standards. Jo had a thermal undershirt under her long sleeve shirt but no sweatshirt. She was also in shorts, although she had her socks pulled high. She was just by herself but no shin guards. She also had sports earmuffs to keep her ears warm but her head was exposed and her hair was loose.
Jo was juggling with the ball. Her concentration was off and she was having trouble getting more than fifteen or twenty taps at a time. For someone of her skill, that was not good.
She finally had a really good run going. A couple of times she had mishit the ball but was able to recover. She was about to get to fifty, when something in her peripheral vision caught her attention. The loss of concentration led to the ball falling on the ground. Jacqui called out, "Wow. That was really good. You kept the ball going for a long time."
"It's called juggling. It's kind of like hacky sack by yourself. It's good for concentration, foot work and coordination." Jo was explaining this to her as she walked over to where Jacqui was standing. Jo was very happy to see her. And even happier to see her with her hair down.
"I hope you don't mind that I came over. I'm not disturbing you, am I?"
"No. That's fine. I'd been at this for a while. I was just about done anyway."
"You're already so good, how come you're out here in the cold when the season just ended?"
"Well, I actually like doing this. It's not only good for my soccer skills, but it helps me clear my head. Besides, it's not really that cold."
"I like that thing on your head. Keeps your ears warm but lets all that lovely hair of yours flow out. You made that comment about my ponytail yesterday, but you always seem to have yours in one as well."
"Yeah, sorry again about that. I wasn't trying to be mean."
"You said you liked seeing my hair down."
"I do."
"Well, Jo. I like seeing your hair down as well. We cheerleaders are all seen as being very "girlie" but we have to be athletic as well you know."
"Yeah. No. I mean, sorry. Yeah, I know there is a lot of work that goes into cheerleading too." Jo was not sure why she ...
