... 24 hours, end-to-end, from the moment we hung up at the airport yesterday to the second her call came in today. Even the mutual masturbation session with Kell. I cried a lot.
“Wow,” she said when I was finished. “No more bullshit. Did you take this job so you could be near Kell? Yes or no.”
“I . . . I didn’t think so,” I said, between sniffles. “I don’t know.”
“You don’t know?” she practically yelled in exasperation. “Jacob, for fuck’s sake. You are the most organized, hyper-planned person I know. I remember one time as a kid you made a schedule of everything you were going to do on your free time for the next month. A couple years ago we were deciding what to order for dinner and you said you had a busy day the next day so not to order Mexican because it would throw off your pooping schedule. How can you say you don’t know?”
“I don’t know. Fuck it. I don’t know Bridget, okay?”
There was a long silence, then Bridget started laughing. “Maybe you don’t know, but everyone else in the family assumes you guys are an item!”
“They do? And their okay with it?”
“More like they love you both and they have accepted that two grown, mature adults are having a relationship and they just have to deal with it. Acceptance, not approval.”
“And did you think we were a pair?”
“Yes! I’m not staying at Ethan’s, he and I are staying at mom and dad’s. You could have too, but when they had to go out of town, I figured you would probably prefer to hang out with Kell. Look . ...
... . .” she swung the camera around, revealing the office in my parents’ house.
“You lied to me!”
“I did it with the best intent, I thought I was doing you a favor. Look, if you want to come out here and stay with us, you can. No more games.”
“Really?”
“Yes, but Kell isn’t going to wait forever. The door is open now, it has been open for the last five years. She thought you were walking through it when you came to town. If you walk away now, the door may be closed forever.”
“How do you know that?”
“Because she called me right before I called you. She was crying and basically told me the same story you did. Except she left out the part about your little stroke party – thanks for sharing that…” She shook her head.
“Kell really thought I moved to town to be near her?”
“Yep, and you broke her heart.”
I thought of my first week in town. Kell and I had gone to dinner. She had looked gorgeous in a filmy blue silk dress and I noticed how beautiful she was.
And I had broken her heart.
“I need to get home. I need to fix this.”
I grabbed a couple of boxes of clothes to take back with me – I figured I would be at Kell’s for the long haul and beyond, then I bolted. My mind was racing down the pathways of Plan X, calculating, pondering, giving me directions. I made two quick stops then raced to Kell’s.
Kell was still dressed as I had left her that morning – except the robe was gone and she wore a painter’s smock. She was sitting on a stool in her studio, ...
