... village. A bike would do just fine," said Andrew trying not to sound desperate.
"Well, I used to bicycle a lot when I was young. I suppose I could take it up again. One presumes it's a bit like riding a bike," said Celeste, laughing at her own unintended joke. Adrew laughed too.
There was a brief silence before he adopted a more serious face. Celeste caught the change of mood. Andrew leant towards her as if to share a confidence. She mirrored his movement.
"I have something of a more sensitive nature to ask you," he said, speaking in a low tone while looking around him.
"Ask away, I'm a ward sister. I don't shock easily," Celeste said quietly.
"Well, erm, it's important that I ask. Forgive me, but have you had any sexual experience? Sorry," asked Andrew.
A moment's silence was followed by Celeste saying, "A little.
"Well, rather a lot actually. Why do you ask?"
"Good," said Andrew, "No, what I mean is that it is useful. I get so many questions from female patients about sexual matters. Particularly about what is 'normal' in the bedroom. God knows that I have no idea. Half the time I think that they ask just to embarrass me."

Celeste looked down and said, "We all just did what we had to to get by."
"Still we are here now," she added.
"You have painted a tempting picture of your village and the work to be done.
"There is one personal obstacle that I could struggle with. Can I have time to consider your offer?" said Celeste.
"By all means, I don't want you making a rash decision.
"Could you telephone me next Saturday? I will understand if that doesn't give you enough time," said Andrew.
Celeste smiled, "No, that will be fine. Can we make it early evening?"
"Yes, by all means. If by any chance I get called out, please ring back.
"I must warn you that if you refuse I will offer you anything in the world to make you change your mind. Upper Slingsford needs Sister Celeste Lanyon.

The following week saw Celeste doing some deep soul searching.
In some ways it was worse for Andrew. If she didn't want the job he was determined to ask if he could see her again. If she accepted, they would be on a professional footing and he was convinced that he wouldn't be able to suggest anything of the ...
