Annie stood, kissing me on top of the head, and retreated to the bedroom. I sat for a moment, then got a pad of paper to write out my terms. I wrestled with what I wanted to say for quite a while. I didn't want to make it restrictive, but I wanted it known that if this was going to happen with my blessing, they weren't going to have unfettered freedom.

The rules I wrote down were:

#1 - No public dates within 50 miles of our hometown or at any work conferences or events. Private dates may happen at either the Dingle or Powers residences provided they are suitably private.

#2 - No public recognition of our new agreement at any time. That includes anything that could be considered humiliation, innuendo, or outing of the Dingles' lifestyle. Ken Dingle will be the sole arbiter of what is public recognition.

#3 - All efforts shall be undertaken to keep the Dingle children shielded from this arrangement.

#4 - Ken Dingle shall be told ahead of time whenever Annie Dingle and Arthur Powers are planning to get together.

#5 - There shall be no secrets kept from Ken Dingle by Annie Dingle and/or Arthur Powers as it ...

... relates to this arrangement. That includes information about physical activities, conversations, and plans for future activities.

#6 - Annie Dingle and Arthur Powers will be unable to meet on certain dates, including birthdays, anniversaries, and important dates for the Dingles' children.

#7 - Any violation of these terms, as determined by Ken Dingle, shall result in immediate termination of this arrangement with all parties returning to a pre-agreement relationship. There will be no consequences to either the Dingles' marriage or Ken Dingle's employment as long as activities cease immediately. Continued play between Annie Dingle and Arthur Powers following termination of this agreement may trigger consequences.

I'm not going to lie, I was feeling pretty good about the terms I laid out. It protected what I viewed as important without being too heavy handed. I carried the notepad up the stairs and showed what I came up with to Annie. She read through the terms, but her wrinkled nose told me she had a problem.

"Sorry, Ken," Annie said to me. "I don't agree with number five at all and I have some concerns with number four."

"Ok," I said slowly as my emotional balloon deflated. "What would you change?"

"Well, like for number four, what if you're with the kids and Arthur and I decide to meet up? Then we might be in violation of number three. How about throwing an 'if possible' in there?"
