The knock on my apartment door Tuesday night surprised me.

"Esme, how wonderful to see you. Come in. I'll make some tea."

"Thank you my dear. It has been such a long time since we have been able to catch up. I have called in several times over the last few weekends, but you have obviously been busy."

I carried the tea into the dining table. We sat together sipping the tea. "How have you been my dear. Grant mentioned your divorce is finalized. Has that been traumatic?"

"No, in all honesty. I know he is your son, but. I'm glad it's over. I am sad because I allowed myself to be played by him. I thought he loved me."

"Sasha, dearest. I think he did love you. He is a fool, and a sex addict I think. Howard has demanded if he wants to keep his job. He has to get treatment. I am so sorry he hurt you so deeply."

Feeling anxious, I knew I had to be honest. "I'm over him actually I've met somebody."

"Good lord Sasha, that seems a little hasty dear. Are you sure it is not a rebound relationship?"

"I'm certain. In fact I'm so sure, we are getting married."

"Married, oh heavens my dear, Sasha. I am sorry but I must counsel you against that. It is far to soon. Who is this person?"

Swallowing deeply, I took a second to gather my senses. I had nothing to feel ashamed of. "It's somebody I met on line. One of those dating sites."

"Oh no, no, no my dear. Say it isn't so."

"Esme, it's a ...

... woman."

"What..." I thought she was about to choke. "Did you say a woman?"

"Yes, I know this must be a shock for you. Believe me, it shocked the heck out of me. Her name is Daisy, and I don't know why, but. We connected. I felt something I've never felt before. I thought I loved Grant, but honestly. Love is so much more than what we had."

"Dear, are you sure. It could be a phase. You have been terribly hurt by, Grant. This could be just a wild over reaction."

"No, I realize what I sound like. How improbable and ridiculous it sounds, but. We're in love."

"We're getting Married Esme, and I was hoping you would do the honor of giving me away."

"Married, but it is not legal. How can you marry?"

"You're right. It wouldn't be a wedding, but a civil union."

"This is too much dear. I am completely astounded. You can't possibly be serious."

"Yes Esme, and it will be soon."

"Good heavens dear, why, what is the rush?"

"Daisy, was about to lose her family farm, and I had some ideas to help. Unfortunately the bank wouldn't loan me the money because I don't own the property. They wouldn't loan Daisy, the money because she cannot afford the repayments. If we were wed, the property would be partially mine, and I could arrange the mortgage."

"That doesn't sound like a good reason to get married my dear. Why do you need the money?"

I explained the situation, and as I opened up into what I planned. I watched her eyes get bigger and bigger.

"A restaurant, and farm stay. ...
