... the land, and keep the house?"

"The state changed the laws on subdivision. We are already below the minimum. We have no option. Even if we sold it, in it's current state. We would walk away owing money."

Without warning, she was in my arms, and her tears flowed like cascading waters.

"Hey, it's okay. Shush, take a breath, slow down your breathing." I felt her body release some tension, her hand came up to wipe away the tears. Her wet cheeks rubbed against my shoulder.

"I'm so sorry Sasha. This is all my fault. I feel terrible that I gave my brother your details. I don't know what I was thinking."

"Shush, it's okay." My voice a hoarse whisper. "Everything will work out."

"No it's not. I've never even had a parking ticket. I'm not a criminal. I'm frightened the whole time. I hate that we keep you chained up in here like an animal. I hate it."

"Stop, we can save this. Let me walk away. My fear is that your brother is going to get in to deep. Do something rash and end up in prison."

"I know, he is desperate. This has got so out of control."

"Then let's fix it. You and I. We can fix this. Let me go, drive me hours away and leave me on the roadside. I don't know you, or where this place is. Even if I wanted to turn you in. I couldn't."

She jumped up still sobbing and ran from the room. "I'm sorry Sasha, I can't do that to him. If there's even a remote chance it could work, we have to take it."

The door slammed shut, and I heard the lock click ...
    ... over.

Damn it. We were so close. I felt it, she wanted to let me go. Unlike the previous days. It was much later when she opened the door. "Would you like to shower?"

    "Yes please."

I tried to speak, but she stopped me with a brusque snappy statement.

"Stop, please don't speak. If you do I will close the door and walk away."

With my hood in place, I felt her hands guiding me up the hallway. I heard every squeaking floorboard. The brush of a fresh breeze as we passed an open door. The odors, lavender, hair spray. Freshly laundered clothes.

Obviously Daisy's room. That knowledge did give me a better understanding of the plan of the house. Her room was next to mine. The bathroom, the other side of the hallway.

From the smells wafting up the hallway. The kitchen was at the end of the hallway.

The shower did it's job, my muscles relaxing, the tension easing.

Jeremy's desperation worried me. I feared it would force him to do something reckless. Daisy might not want to harm me, but he didn't share the same views on the world, that I was sure of. There was no signs of empathy, in those eyes.

Slowly over the day, Daisy's hard edge softened. It wasn't in her, I sensed she was at the end of her tether. She was a warm tender person. A caring individual, the sort who would put their life at risk to save a cat, or dog.

She brought in my lunch, placed the tray on the bed, and sat with me. "I'm sorry for all of this Sasha, and I'm sorry for the way I spoke to you. ...
