She walked out leaving me alone in the dark.

It was much later that I heard the voices outside, and the smell of cigarette smoke. "God damn it. They keep stalling. There's always an excuse. I think we need to send them a message that says we mean business, maybe an ear or finger. Something that shows them we're serious."

"Like hell, Jeremy." Daisy snapped loudly. "You promised me, the only reason I agreed to help is you frigging promised we wouldn't hurt her. It's bad enough we keep her locked up."

"Yeah well I didn't know her husband was such a fucking tool. Jesus, Daisy. What sort of man leaves his wife to die. He must be a real asshole."

"Jeremy, she said we could set up an overseas bank account under false names. We wouldn't have to panic about picking it up."

The morning brought fear. The previous night, I sensed the anxiety in Jeremy's voice. He was close to cracking. Daisy may not want to harm me, but Jeremy, that was a whole different kettle of fish.

I heard the floorboards creaking long before the door swung open, and Daisy walked in with my breakfast. As always, it was delightful.

"How's your brother holding up. He sounded pretty stressed yesterday."

"Not well, he's not a bad person Sasha. Circumstances have pushed us into a corner."

"Why is the farm failing?" I asked trying to understand.

"It's a small farm. In years past it was always successful. Our parents sold off part of the land to get money for college for us. They never thought it through. It's now not big enough to work as a farm. It's still a big property, and the taxes are huge, so even just living here is expensive."
