She smiled, and she knew I got her good. We sat down and ate dinner together, and I asked her about her day.

"Actually, it was really interesting," she said, brightening up.

"Oh? What happened?" I asked. Sometimes, there was some really interesting casework that Carly worked on, but she'd been telling me the last few days that the current case Susan had her working on was a total slog, poring over documents and statistics.

"This morning when I got to my office, there was a post-it on my screen from Susan, asking me to come by her office.

She brought me in and shut the door, and at first I thought I was in trouble. She quickly clarified that I wasn't, and then started asking me how I liked my job. I told her I was happy where I was and enjoyed working for her and the firm in general. I liked the hours, happy with the pay, and now I actually have a lot of friends in the office.

Then she asked me point blank if I wanted to be a lawyer."

She stopped for a minute to gauge my reaction. Naturally, I got excited for her.

"That's great! That's what you went to school for in the first place anyway. What do you think?" I said. She smiled wide and got excited as well.

"I was surprised, because I thought that opportunity was gone. But if there's a possibility of me being a lawyer, I'm definitely interested in it!"

Carly continued,

"So Susan explained that she recommended me to the named partners, and they are ...

... taking her recommendation to the board of directors. If I'm picked, they will sponsor me for Law School, and keep me on the payroll as a full-time employee but reduce my workload so I can go to class and study. The only condition is that I work for the firm for 5 years after graduation. But that's not a big deal for me, I love it there!"

Her energy was palpable, and I was excited for the possibility of her achieving her dream.

"I say go for it!" I said.

"Yeah, I think I will... it may be a little of a long shot, I have to get the blessing of the board, but at least it's a chance. I should find out if I've been selected in about a month," Carly said.

As excited as I was for her, I was also relieved that she had dropped the whole laptop thing. If she would have opened it, she would have found the browser page I was looking at, full of diamond rings, one of which I was going to give her.

We had a lazy Saturday planned, with nothing on the agenda. I'd worked 6 day shifts in a row, and Carly had finally completed the increased workload for Susan, so she was given a week off work as a reward. There were still a few weeks before she heard the decision on whether she was going to be sponsored for law school, but she was getting a little nervous with anticipation for that decision. According to her, Susan had a great feeling about it and thought Carly was a sure choice. Carly was having trouble being that optimistic.
