... in my life. You took that trust and shattered it. Through that, though, I have met people who have shown me what you should have. People that respect me for who I am, and people who love me. They have allowed me to open myself to them, and for the first time in my life, I am free. Because of you, I went from one of the darkest points of my life to the brightest. I forgive you, Rick. I hope you can forgive yourself." There wasn't a dry eye on the prosecution side of the courtroom. The judge hit the gavel on a 9-year prison sentence, and Rick was taken away. The courtroom exploded in cheers, and Carly found herself in the middle of our group, getting hugs all round. My dad got everyone's attention. "I reserved a private room this evening at a steakhouse downtown, dinner's on me tonight!" Cheers all around, we left the courthouse, Carly's hand in mine. ------------- I watched Carly that night at dinner, as she interacted with everyone. He patted her on the back and let her stay there for as long as she wanted. It being a weeknight with most everyone having to work, the party broke up around 8:30. Carly stood by the door to the restaurant, thanking everyone for coming that night. When it came Brandi and June's turn to say goodbye, I saw them exchanging numbers, and they all looked up at me at the same time and giggled. I rolled my eyes and smiled back and heard June say "Don't be a stranger, we've got a lot more stories!" When everyone was gone, she walked up to me. I wrapped her up in my arms, picking her up off the ground. As her feet touched back down, I leaned over and kissed her. "I love you so much, Carly," I said. "Thank you for today, Jason. I love you too," Carly replied ...
