Carly glanced nervously at me, but Detective Shepard continued.

"We completed the arrest and read him his Miranda Rights. So when I got to the jail, I put him in an interview room and showed him the security footage from the garage. He started claiming it was self defense."

"How could it possibly be self defense?! I was literally standing there not doing anything!" Carly said indignantly.

"That's the best part. It's clearly not self-defense, anyone can tell that just from the body language on the video. When I asked him why he thought he needed to defend himself, he straight up told me that you said you were a 'fucking tranny' and he wasn't going to let you do anything to him."

Now I was seeing red again. This guy gets locked up for beating the hell out of a woman half his size, and doesn't think he was in the wrong, even sitting in jail?

"So I asked him if he hit you because you told him you were trans, and he said he did. So I stepped out and called the District Attorney's Office, who agreed with me that the charges needed to be enhanced because now he was admitting to a hate crime," Detective Shepard said.

Carly was stunned. "What does that mean?" She asked.

"It means that when he's convicted, whatever sentence he gets will have two years added onto it, possibly even three. It was self confessed, boldly, if I might ...

"Thank you, Detective Shepard! You have been great and I really appreciate what you're doing for me," Carly said, clearly blown away.

"You deserve it, Carly. From what I can tell, and I'm a pretty decent judge of character, you are a wonderful woman and you have a lot going for you. Now, I'm going to let you go so I can get this finished up, but I want to keep in contact with you, so I can give you updates on what's happening on my end, is that ok?"

"Absolutely, detective. Thanks again!" Carly said.

"Not at all, Carly. And call me Beth. We'll talk soon!"

Carly hung up the phone. She had a relieved look on her face, and looked up me. Slowly, a grin spread across her face. She was radiant, and I felt relieved and happy for her as well. This ordeal might not be completely over, but it was looking great for Carly. I pulled her in for another hug, which she was all too happy to receive. I heard her start laughing a little, so when she looked back up at me, I asked her.

"What's funny?"

"So Beth thinks you're cute!" Carly said, laughing still.

"So Beth has good taste!" I said back to her.

"So she does, Jason... so she does," Carly sighed, leaning back and looking content.

"Alright Carly, let me get out of your hair for awhile and get some work done, I'll come back to check on you later?" I said, rising from the bed where I was still sitting.
