... wants to talk to you."

She walked up, and we went to the back of the Rocket and sat in a secluded spot. She has kind eyes, even if they looked right through you. You never quite got used to it.

"Have you talked to Melissa Dave?"

That was abrupt and to the point. "No, but I told Melissa I was away, and she could get anything she wanted from the loft."

"Mike, she's been staying with us since Monday. She's really fucked up."

This was a surprise to me, and it showed on my face.

"She took a white key tag on Monday night."

I closed my eyes to hold back some tears. Grace was still inside me, and I knew that was a big first step for anyone struggling with substance. It was confusing at the same time.

"Ok, thank you for telling me." Then, she waited for me to continue. "But why is she here?"

"She came back from her parents on Sunday. She stayed at the loft but was freaking out the next day. She came here to speak to Mike. He took one look and knew she was done."

So she wasn't with Ryan, or was Ryan at her parent's house with her? My hands got instantly clammy; anger, hurt, and all sorts of emotions were bubbling up inside me. "Was Ryan with her?" Thinking how disrespectful it would be if Melissa had him back at the loft. Even if it was to help her move her shit out.

Charity grabbed my hands as I was absently wringing them on the table. This made me look up into her eyes.

"She's not with him, Dave; she never loved him. She still loves you."

    That ...
... statement exploded inside my head. The wave of emotions was overwhelming, with a terrible mix of bad and good. Hate and love. Anger and happiness. I had rarely been so uncomfortable. It took me some time to calm down. Charity just held my hands and said nothing. "Well, that changes nothing, really, does it?"

"Yes, it does because, at the very least, you need to know the truth. Look, Melissa's really messed up. She knows she fucked up and needs to talk to you and not hide what she's feeling inside. Melissa's a turtle. This is how she copes. Frankly, Dave, she's a remarkable young woman, but I think you know that."

I nodded but still had my jaw clenched.

"She's at the loft right now. Waiting for you."

All my grace was gone, and I quickly rolled through the plan I had made. I repeated the steps until I had the correct stiff upper lip.

"I don't know if I want to see or listen to her."

"Yes, you do, Mike. You need the closure. You need to salvage some memories, and Melissa needs this if she's ever going to have a chance."

Grace came back with just a wisp, but it was enough.

Mike came over, and Charity went back to man the bar. He and I quickly checked in on my plans, specifically about not picking up. I had tools. Mike was just reminding me that Melissa was a newcomer and that there was a "give back" code. He was giving back.

Very unsettled, I said my goodbyes, and we made loose plans to get together soon. I left with a fearful determination.

    Melissa ...
