... money man." Anger came back with a vengeance. Maybe I should make the moves on the waitress. And with that, I fired the boat up and returned to the resort.

The high-speed ride over the water put me back into a Zen space. I cleaned the fish, then went to town for some groceries and intentionally avoided the resort restaurant. Fresh Walleye and a salad with a diet coke to wash it down. I had to fight some urges to buy beer, but I had made it back. I reviewed my plans, pushed away the bad bargains and made good ones for me. I slept like a baby.

I woke the next day, ran on the wood trails, stretched, and exercised, and returned to the lake. I emailed my boss, Bruce, and filled him in on my breakup with Melissa and my choice to get clean again. He told me to take as much time as I needed. By Tuesday, I was suntanned, my jeans didn't fit, and everyone asked me where I was catching the fish. The waitress showed up at the beach in a bikini Monday and Tuesday and made a point of coming to say hello to me when I docked the boat. Frankly, I was nervous at the thought of sex with anyone. I cringed and hoped that was temporary.

I told the Hostess I was going to check out the next day. I ate at the resort Tuesday night, and thankfully, the waitress had the night off. On Wednesday, I took a dawn trip in the boat, fishing the ...
... honey holes I had kept secret. The demons had not shown their shitty faces, and my bouts of sadness were peppered with a stern upper lip and a plan taking shape. I packed the car and said my goodbyes; I got a hug from the bikini-clad waitress, who I learned was the twenty-three-year-old granddaughter of the Hostess. I said to myself,"Stay away from the young ones, " but I was surprised to feel a twitch in my pants and blushed when she brushed into it. Good thing I was leaving.

As I was driving, I called Mike. He was happy I'd made seven days and asked if I could drop by the Rocket before I went home. I said sure. Feeling more human, I drove back to the city with nary a peep from the demons the entire time.

    Charity and Melissa Bond

Charity took the day off on Tuesday and took Melissa on a streetcar tour of the city. She had lived there all her life and knew places few had found. Mike and Melissa were going to a meeting after dinner, but for now, Charity wanted to distract Melissa and try to get her out of her shell. She was so sad for this young woman. There is so much promise and spirit and some huge mistakes that could foster despair or fundamental change. Charity was trying to tilt the scales to change. She wanted Melissa to gain the courage to find a way for her to tell Dave truly and honestly she was sorry. Melissa needed it to heal, and Dave also needed it for closure. Who knew where that would go, but she and Mike knew they both needed some clean time.

    When ...
